|
 |
|
"Due to continued abuse, t-dialin will be permanently glined at 22:00 GMT today" we can read today on the QuakeNet website.
We asked Magpie, admin on QuakeNet, what type of abuse forced QuakeNet to Gline this large German ISP. "The majority of the abuse tends to be impersonating services in an attempt to steal users' Q account passwords, and thus take over their channels. The abuse is not limited to this, however, and also includes mass spamming, spreading of Trojans and so on."
Naturally, QuakeNet did tried to contact the ISP in question in order to try and resolve abusive issues, but the ISP lacked cooperation in handling the abuse reports. "There have been numerous emails sent in the past, to no avail. However, I believe a staff member did manage to corner a T-dialin employee at CeBIT this year, so we'll have to wait and see whether or not this helps matters", Magpie explains.
Finally, Magpie explains that if ISPs would assign users unique IPs, it would be much easier to handle abusers. "This sort of thing causes us no end of problems as an IRC network, with users of particular ISPs able to simply rejoin with a new IP within seconds. I'm sure you'll agree that having to ban large swathes of users in order to take out one abuser is a far from ideal solution."

CeBIT is massive. And although you can have good conversations with people during the event you cannot talk serious business with most (larger) companies when it comes to negative aspects. They are quite eager to discuss business deals however, and most of them won't hesitate to provide you with some serious good lunch (which is quite expensive over there I might add) but that is about it.
Ofcourse you can't globalize everything happening there but when looking back at the last 6 years when I visited CeBIT for my company the "negative" talks all went rather well during the meeting itself but had no follow up what so ever. In this I recall discussions with APC, T-Mobile, Sony and some other company who's name I forgot.. Some of those actually promised me to at least respond after giving them my business card but all to no avail.
Not a biggie, thats not the issue here, but I really doubt if this network will ever have a follow up. IMO the people on the CeBIT stand are purely there to accommodate the visitors. If you actually meet someone with a little more indepth knowledge its very likely that he's only there to impress the potential customers or get into the action when $good_prepared_customer goes to ask about certain specific aspects.
Now... To get a little offtopic here if I may; that is one of the major & interesting things I've seen on CeBIT this year; the increasing presence of the Asian companies. Not only can you do very good business with these people, in the overall (once again, not trying to globalize here) they keep their promises when it comes to getting back at you or providing more information.
From that point of view I think you'd have a bigger chance to get some kiddie kicked from an Asian hosting company who happens to be at CeBIT...
Just my 2 cents.

They had a second post which was an obvious april's fool joke.
Seems unlikely they pulled two April's fool jokes? Anyway, if it is, this seems a rather weird subject to make a joke about.
Such latge ISPs HAVE been globally glined/KLined BTW. Like Videotron on Undernet a while ago.

I went to Quakenet, there was no mass disappearance of t-dialin.net users.
They joke about it because they know it's what a lot of people want.

Well, I agree with Asmo here. If this was indeed a joke (seems so) its not the best I've seen around.
IMO a good joke should be played in a way where you basicly present a totally weird situation which has enough hints in the story to make people who really read wonder if it is all for real.
And ofcourse you should always make sure that things do not get out of hand... In this case I can't help wonder..
hehe, I recall 2 jokes which I played (not in the same year ) on the UnderNet channel I frequent. At first we presented the story with an 'Chanop test' which would require all ops to undergo a test to see if they were really good op material. That started quite the riot, but also had people who saw right through it and picked up the hints I put in the whole story.
Then the latest was a respons on our op & users mailinglists on how we were having problems coping with all the several websites and thingies we ran on the Net so we decided to sell our entire userbase to $some_company. People who knew better (privacy & security is always a big issue for us) also saw right through it but it caused enough people to disconnect themselves from the mailinglist (after which they immediatly received an email which explained the situation to them).
Now I don't say that those are much better jokes or anything, but I do think that with enough subtle hints and without overdoing it it can be more fun. However, you always need to keep control to make sure that things don't get out of hand, and with this amount of people I doubt they can do that.

Ah well, in my writing up of this article I asked Magpie if this REALLY wasnt a Aprils Fool joke, and he assured me it wasnt.
Ah well, 2 jokes, I fell for one of them then ;)

Well considering t-dialin users are still on there, and the news has been removed from the site...kinda makes one wonder just what is going on with that network if they can't get their facts straight? all I scan say is lame. hehe

This was of course all a joke, sorry Asmo.
Incidentally, everything I'm quoted as saying with regards to the abuse and approaching T-Online employees is entirely true.

Why make two April Fools jokes though? I see it was a good way to make the GLining thingy more believable ;)

ShelUser: How can you analyse an april fools like that? It turns out that keeping it simple and plain seemed to fool everyone a lot more. And that is of course the whole point. A day of inconvenience for t-dialin users who think their going to be G-lined is hardly "out of control".
Besides, everyone who is not gullible realises that just about anything posted on a network's website or news site on the 1st of April is probably not true, even if it's something as simple as g-lining a large ISP.
Regards,

To be honest, when you emailed me asking for comments I hadn't actually realised that we (as in QuakeNet) had made such a post. It wasn't until a bit later on I realised that there was a post (2 of them, no less).
