Australian Man Charged with DDoS to IRC Networks

A 22 year-old man from Victoria, Australia has been arrested in Melbourne yesterday. He has been charged with several DDoS attacks which includes attacks he performed towards IRC Networks.

It was inititally the Belgian police who tipped the Australian police about the man. But also ISPs in United States, Singapore and Austria were affected by the DDoS which took place from botnets.

“Bots and bot networks continue to be of concern and are linked … to a range of other malicious activity including identity theft and spam,” said Mr Zuccato, from the Australian High Tech Crime Centre.

The maximum penalty for this type of offense in Australia is 10 years in prison.

Undernet Introduces Chanfix

Rumors have been going around for a while already on Undernet about the introduction of a Chanfix service introduction. A bot with the nick chanfix was online, but with a realname “Chanfix is not yet available on Undernet.”

Yesterday, Undernet officially announced the new service with a network wide notice inviting users to join #Class and learn about the new service:

-LiveEvent- The UnderNet User Committee will be presenting a LiveEvent concerning ChanFix for users of the UnderNet and IRC. To attend, please type /join #Class now. Thanks, and please do not reply ;)

Chanfix is a service originated on the EFnet network, and is coded to help users maintain their ops on channels. EFnet traditionally never offered channel services, such as X on Undernet. On Undernet however, it is quite hard for users to get X on their channel  because of the strict requirements. Especially for the smaller channels it is hard to get registered.

Chanfix, as it is implemented on Undernet, will automatically reop channels (with a minimum of 4 users) as they become opless. It will constantly gather data regarding who is opped, and will automatically reop the users with the highest score. Scores are kept together with the username the user is logged in with, not with the hostmask of the user. So at least one, but preferably a few users of a channel needs to be logged in to X for this service to work for that channel.

Update: The Undernet User Committee who organised the event have released the logfile for reference here.

Happy Bot Day!

After valentines day, mothers’ day, secretary day (got to get me one) and you-know-what-else day, we also have bot day!

Not sure what organization or person is behind the invention of this one, but heck, bots deserve all the recognition they can get! Performing un-thankful jobs of maintaining statistics, opping/voicing users, setting topics and a whole range of other tasks we make them able to with expanding them with scripts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Except of course, for those moments where the shell is down or the wrong process is killed …

They sure make our online experience a whole lot easier and richer!

Cheers to Horcsog for the haads up =)

Person Spreading Trojans Over IRC Arrested

Lately a wave of arrests have been made regarding people using DDoS, and today a press release has been made regarding the arrest of 30 year-old Richard C. Honour, nicknamed Fyle/Anatoly from Seattle.

Honour is believed to have coded and then spread trojans over IRC. Infected PCs were supplying Honour with information such as online banking and other identity and privacy sensitive data.

“This name is not just familiar with DarkMyst, but throughout the IRC community” said Ryan, admin on DarkMyst in a reaction to IRC-Junkie. “Honours’ activities affected many IRC networks, many of which were involved in the operation and provided information that led to his arrest.”

“Computer viruses have the potential to cause an incredible amount of damage to the nation’s economy,”] said United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway who is handling this case. “This office will pursue these cases aggressively.”

If found guilty, Honour can receive a maximum of 10 years in prison and a possible fine of $250,000 USD.
