Its January 2001, the current situation on Undernet is not cool. So called "script kiddies" are attacking Undernet, and forcing Internet Service Providers to shut down servers they have been providing free to you and me, the IRC users.
The absence of X and W is not pleasent, but a necessary evil becuase attacking X and W means that paying customers of those ISP's dont get the service they pay for.
It is the nature of IRC that a channel will get opless when all ops leave the channel, while there are still visitors in the channel. When that happens, there are only two ways to get ops back:
1) Get all visitors to #channelname2, till the channel is empty, and have the op return to it.
2) For larger channels where ppl are idling and sleeping etc, a oper can determine the rightfull op after following strict rules, and op him again.
Other reasons a channel might loose all ops are attacks like Nukes and Floods, or netsplits.
On this page you will see some tips how to keep your ops, plz follow them, and your channel will not be deopped so soon.
Op your friends, and keep them opped.
Plz Op all your trusted friends and regulars. Get a good script like airC for mIRC, or get yourself a eggdrop bot. All these scripts/bots make it possible for your friends to op themself based on a password. So when you are sleeping, the ppl can get their ops in a save way.
Warning:stay away from "bot lending" channels. There are channels operating on Undernet that like to profile themself as a official bot service. In practise they are just gathering channels, and in most cases they dont provide the channel owner any acces at all on that bot. Channels that make use of these bot services can NOT be helped by official helpers and/or opers.
Make use of different servers like US servers and European servers, so that in the case of a netsplit, not all ops are lost at once.
Check your goofy script! Believe it or not, but me and a oper opped a channel manager once, after wich he deopped himself, and us again. "Sorry, i had Bitch mode turned on", was the answer we got. If you are deopping your own friends, you are asking for trouble. Besides, it makes you look *very* stupid.
How to handle flooders
If your channel is flooded, set the flooders on ignore, and/or set the channel +m and give the users voice who are trusted. For ping flood etc, use Zonealarm. It is a free firewall that will give you perfect protection. Be warned that the moment you install it, ALL Internet acces will be blocked, and you will have to allow mIRC to acces the Internet, so op trusted friends first (they should have been opped already neway).
