Error Quit messages
Read/write errors
*** Asmo has quit IRC (Read error to Asmo[CC3524-a.deven5.ov.nl.home.com]: EOF from client)
The server expected more information coming from Asmo, but Asmo's IRC client gave a EOF (End Of File) error.
*** Asmo has quit IRC (Write error to Asmo[CC3524-a.deven5.ov.nl.home.com], closing link)
The server sends data back to the IRC client of user Asmo, but in this case the data did not reached Asmo. The server disconnects Asmo as a result.
*** Asmo has quit IRC (connection reset by peer)
The IRC client of Asmo has disconnected from the IRC server due to a error in his software, or Operation System, and as such, did not send a proper command to the server that it has closed the connection. The server closes the ghost that remains.
Ping Timeouts
*** Asmo has quit IRC (Ping timeout for Asmo[CC3524-a.deven5.ov.nl.home.com])
To check if a connection is still alive, the server regulary sends ping requests to its users, and the IRC client of the user sends a pong back. If the returning of the pong has stopped, this will result in the above Ping Timeout.
Oper controlled quits
*** Asmo has quit IRC ((G-lined)Flooding is not allowed on this network)
Here Asmo have been a very naughty boy. And a IRC oper have seen him misbehaving, and as a result, G-Lined him. A G-Line usually is a 1 hour, or 1 day ban from the network. (if the word "Local" preceeds this message, the user is only G-Lined from the server he used)
*** Asmo has quit IRC ((K-lined)Constant flooding and abuse)
Here Asmo really screwed up, and have gotten a K-Line. A K-Line is a permanent ban from a server, or total network. You must misbehave really badly to get a K-Line. (if the word "Local" preceeds this message, the user is only K-Lined from the server he used)
*** Asmo has quit IRC ((Killed)Happy birthday!)
Here user Asmo got a kill from apparently a oper he knows (probally blax, he loves to /kill on birthday's). A kill is a disconnection from the server. The user can reconnect immediately again to the network. Kill's are often used to really make clear to a user that he has to stop whatever he was doing.
Other quit messages
*** Asmo has quit IRC (H22.eu.undernet.org diemen.nl.eu.undernet.org)
This is the result of a so called netsplit. The connection between two servers is broken, and you are on one side, while Asmo is on the other side of the split, resulting in this error quit message. Usually quit a few other users are going along in the netsplit.
*** Quits: Asmo (Excess Flood)
User Asmo has send to much data to the server, and as a precaution, the server disconnected him for that. You usually see these quit messages from malicious ppl trying to flood other users from the network

Terminology
31337 Supposely superior of knowledge in some area of knowledge, in our case IRC. Use of numbers to write words, like in this case "eleet" seems to be necessary among these ppl.. Oh, and m$ sux, and your computer is a b0x. And dont forget to ph33r them. lol
action Line of text that starts with your own nicj\k, by the use of the /me command. Usually shows up like:
[20:38] * Asmo gets a cold beer
Addon script Small script that can be loaded into a IRC client program, to extend its possibilities. There are for example multiserver addon scripts for mIRC, that allow the user to connect to more networks while not having to open a second mIRC to do so.
admin Owner of a IRC server.
Back Bone High speed Internet connection. Backbones connect the differnt networks toghether, to form the Internet.
Back Orifice One of the most feared so called Trojabn Horse V\virus around. Originally released by the Cult of the Death Cow hacker group.

Freeware Software you can use completely for free. You dont have to pay anything for it. The maker of the software decided to give it away freely. Also referred to as Public Domain (PD).
Full scripts As opposed to addon scripts, who usually only add one extra functionality, full scripts usually add a LOT of extra features. For example the aIRC script for mIRC adds multiserver, email clients, portscanner, a full eggdrop, good away system, clone/mask/etc scanners, and more features. Usually its the "power users" that go bonkers about these extra functions, the more the better!
Geek Worst kind of netizen you can find. A ani\ti social, melodramatic pimpel head who only cares about his computers.
Hacker Person with great knowledge of programming and network protocols. Uses this knowledge to try to break in computers. Shows great interest in security. Not to be confused with script kiddies, who only try to cuase as much damage as they can
Hax0r Another word for a script kiddie. These ppl have no ethics at all, and try to cuase as much damage as they can. They probally have a very low self esteem, cant get a girlfriend, and try to "be someone" on IRC.

The term is also used to describe when a fake server is linked in place of a normal server, when the normal server is unable to connect to the network, this to prevent that hostile servers can link to the network to cuase problems. The name comes from a age old IRC Oper named "jupiter", he had fun "juping" users nicks and thus pretend to be them.
kick Remove a user from a channel. The user can rejoin the channel right after the kick. Is usually used to really make clear to the user that whatever he was doing has to stop.
Lag The time it takes before your text reaches the person you are talking to. Although we speak of "Internet Highway", it sure looks like a old sandy road in the middle of the mountains sometimes, especially on IRC.
Lamer A idiot, often used when someone misbehaves. For example when he doesn not read the rules of a channel, and next break them.
leaf IRC server that accepts user connections.
Leech Only get information for yourself, and not uploading/bringing in information yourself. Leechers are often identified soon on a channel, after wich they are often ignored for good. These people are also referred to as Leechers.
Lurker Close to a leecher, but not completely egocentric.
netbus Another Trojan Horse
Netiquette Word formed from Internet and Etiquette. Even tho the Internet is very anarchistic in nature, there are a lot of unwritten rules you have to follow. Like being a leecher is bad, or dropping in a channel and start to a/s/l (asking for Age Sex and Location) everyone, those are all things that can be regarded as very rude, and not in the line of proper netiquette
Netsplit Occurs when a connection between servers break. You can end up on one side of the split, and the person you where talking to, on the other side. You either have to wait for a IRC oper to reconnect the two servers, or goto the server in question where your friend is on.
newbie Formed from "new" and "wannabe". Someone that is new to IRC, and has still a lot to learn about netiquette, and technical IRC stuff in general.
nick Name a person uses on IRC.

Protocol Set of rules 2 computers or more have to follow to establish a certain type of communication. IRC is a protocol, but for example also FTP (File transfer Protocol).
Re "re" is short for "regex" which is short for "regular expression", which is a Unixism for doing text manipulation. A regular expression also happens to be "hello" or "goodbye". Thus the word "re" was used in IRC (since it was begun on an AT&T Unix machine, serving Unix geeks).
Router One of the most vital parts of the Internet, but also the most forgotten one. Routers handle the traffic on undernet, they receive the packets of information, look at the IP adress, and then tried to send it along on the fastest and most short route to the receiver of it. All traffic on Internet passes the routers on their way to their destination.
sendq The data that waits for transmission
server Computer that hosts the IRC program. Here the users connect to to get on IRC. There are two types of servers, Leaf's, that accept user connections, and Hub's that only are linked to other servers.

Trojan Program that looks like something you really want to see, but turns out to give other users control over your machine in a way, that you wish you never activated/accepted the file.
