Drones, a Continuous Problem for Small Networks

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

In February 2006 IRC-Junkie featured an article titled “Help! My Network is in Servers.ini!”. In short, the article names one of the problems small networks engage when they become listed in mIRC’s servers.ini.

One of the major drawbacks is that not only humans use this file, downloading an up-to-date servers.ini is also one of the first things a newly installed drone is doing. And thus, attracting drones is one of the side effects that could cause a lot of problems that eat up valuable resources, which are often not really in abundance on small networks anyway.

DroneBL Going OpenSource

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

DroneBL has gone opensource on the 15th of May. This blacklist for tracking infected machines started out as a research project by Nenolod and a friend back in 2003, and is especially suited to be used on IRC networks.

It was developed under a company both friends had in networking equipment and firmware, with main focus towards security. “In late 2004, NodeRebellion went out of business due to lack of interest. At this time, DroneBL was shutdown, and the codebase was transferred to myself personally”, Nenolod explained to IRC-Junkie.

Undernet Re-implements Multiple Logins on X

Saturday, April 21st, 2007

Undernet introduced multiple logins a few years ago to be forthcoming to users who had to login from work while their home connection was still running for example. In this article however the decision had to be made to remove the functionality again as users were abusing the feature by having bots flood channel that had the +r flag set. The flag requires users to be logged in to join a channel.

Undernet user, and #help op Eenie did not settle with the decision however and started a petition and website in September 2006. “Five hundred and seventy (570) users signed it”, Eenie said to IRC-Junkie.
