While the company continues to release new language models, the long-awaited hardware project that OpenAI develop together with the designer Jony Ive may not arrive as soon as expected. According to a Financial Times report picked up by Engadget, the team still faces technical problems which could delay the launch of the device, initially scheduled for 2026.

The challenges that OpenAI must face: personality, privacy and costs

The difficulties are not limited to hardware development. According to the cited sources, one of the main challenges is defining AI assistant voice and behaviorseeking a balance between closeness and naturalness without making it uncomfortable for the user. The goal, according to the report, is to create “a friend who is a computer, but not your virtual odd partner.”

Another concern revolves around the privacy. The device would be designed to always be aware of the environment, which raises questions about the processing of data and recordings in real time. OpenAI and Ive’s team would still be evaluating how to ensure information security without compromising product functionality.

Additionally, the project faces budgetary challenges derived from the high cost of computing power necessary to manufacture and operate these devices on a large scale. The company seeks to balance technical ambition with commercial viability, a complex task following the limited performance of similar products such as the Humane AI Pin, which was discontinued shortly after its launch.

For now, little is known about the device. Sam Altman himself, CEO of OpenAI, would have told employees that the product will be pocket-sized, environment-aware and screen-free. Although details remain scarce, everything indicates that OpenAI is moving forward cautiously to avoid errors in its first foray into the world of hardware. In fact, these plans are shared by other smaller companies, such as Nothing, which wants to take advantage of its new round of financing to release “native AI devices.” Now, the pattern is the same: big announcements, few details.
