At Apple things are almost never improvised. Although from the outside we see each September as “the year of the new iPhone”, inside everything follows a plan for several years, where each piece fits into a larger puzzle.
That is why the JP Morgan report leaked by Max Winebach is so interesting: it does not limit itself to saying that there will be a folding iPhone “someday”, but that draw a fairly specific timeline in which this foldable future coexists with the following generations of the newly arrived iPhone Air. It’s not official information, but it fits too well with the brand’s recent movements to look at it askance.
The foldable iPhone takes shape (although it will not be a folded “Pro Max”)
The star of the leak is, as expected, the first foldable iPhone. The document places its arrival in the second half of 2026when the format has already been rolling for years in the hands of Samsung, Honor, Xiaomi and company. Apple’s move would not be to arrive first, but to land when the concept is mature and can refine it in its own way.
The most surprising detail is the renunciation of Face ID in this model. Instead, the interior panel would feature a 24-megapixel camera integrated under the screen, accompanied by another 24-megapixel selfie camera on the outside. The idea is clear: Maintain the “all screen” experience inside, without a dynamic island or notch, even if that forces you to change the traditional biometric system of the iPhone. In practice, Apple would have to rely on other forms of authentication, with more weight for the fingerprint reader or the usual PIN.
In the back, the camera module would be relatively contained: Two 48-megapixel sensors, one main and one ultra-wide-angle, without a dedicated telephoto lens. It’s not that Apple has forgotten about photography, it’s that a thin foldable requires negotiating every millimeter of thickness.
It does not seem, therefore, that this first folding iPhone is going to compete in photos with a hypothetical iPhone 18 Pro Max. It will be more of a showcase of what a “book” iPhone can be, designed for those who value above all the large screen that unfolds and the feeling of going everywhere with a mini iPad that fits in your pocket.
iPhone Air 2: Apple insists on the slim format although the figures do not dazzle
The other leg of the report is the future of the Air line. Apple It already has an iPhone Air 2 on the calendar for 2026 and an iPhone Air 3 for 2027. That is, the model would not be an isolated experiment to cover a specific gap, but rather a family with its own path within the range.
The striking thing is that this bet comes in a context of rumors of rather lukewarm salessomething similar to what was already said about the iPhone 16 Plus that it is replacing. Even so, the report suggests that the brand is willing to maintain the concept: a thinner and lighter high-end iPhone, even if that means assuming that it will not be the best-seller in the catalog.
Technically, the leak points to almost total continuity in cameras: Both the Air 2 and the Air 3 would continue with a single 48-megapixel rear sensor. There is no trace of modules with two or three optics, nor of major changes in sensor size.
That doesn’t mean the Airs are going to stay frozen. It is reasonable to think about chip jumps, autonomy, connectivity or screen, but the personality of the model would remain the same: a “clean” iPhone, without camera boasts, designed for those who prefer the phone to disappear in their pocket.
A rarer calendar for the iPhone 18 and longer cycles
The report drops another curious detail: The iPhone 18 family would not arrive all at once. Some models would see the light of day in September 2026, following the usual schedule, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e would leave in 2027. It is not the typical specific delay, but rather an adjustment of pace.
This fit makes sense if you look at it alongside other information that talks about longer product cycles and less obsessed with presenting “the big change” each year. In that context, It would not be strange to see less spectacular intermediate generations in visible noveltiesbut with a lot of background work on energy efficiency, integration with services, AI in the background and finer differentiation between models.
What does this leak leave us about the future of the iPhone
If you look at it as a whole, the leaked roadmap draws quite well where Apple wants to go. On the one hand, the first folding iPhone arrives late if we compare dates with the competition, but it does so following the house’s style book.
On the other hand, the continuity of the iPhone Air confirms that Apple is comfortable having models that do not sweep sales, but play a clear role. And, in the background, the possible rearrangement of the iPhone 18 calendar fits with the idea of an ecosystem that moves at a slightly slower pace.
It is still an analyst report, based on supply chains and internal projections, not an announcement in a keynote. However, the portrait it draws fits too well with the Apple of recent years to discard it.
