Google seems to be preparing one of its most strategic moves in recent years to try to conquer, once and for all, the personal computer market. According to a recent job posting posted on LinkedIn, the tech company is actively developing a new operating system based on Androidknown internally with the codename Aluminum. This project would not be a simple update, but an attempt to unify its platforms to compete directly against Windows and macOS.
The leak, reported by specialized media, confirms that Google seeks to transfer the massive success it has on mobile phones and tablets to the desktop environment. Although ChromeOS has managed to carve out a niche in the educational sector and in basic laptops, it has not yet managed to strongly penetrate the general consumer market or the high-level corporate market, a space that this new development aims to occupy.
Artificial intelligence and new hardware categories
Internal documents suggest that this operating system is designed from the ground up to run on a wide variety of devices, including laptops, tablets, detachable computers and mini PCs. A key point of Aluminum will be its deep integration with artificial intelligence. Unlike current proposals, Google plans to incorporate its Gemini models directly into the core of the system, indicating a deep redesign of the user experience and not just an aesthetic change over the current ChromeOS base.
The leaked hardware roadmap also reveals an ambitious tiered structure. Engineers refer to different categories such as ‘AL Entry’, ‘AL Mass Premium’ and ‘AL Premium’. These labels, which would initially coexist with the current Chromebooks, suggest that Google wants to scale its offering from affordable devices for students to high-end hardware, thus solving one of the historical limitations of its current ecosystem.
Although the name Aluminum could simply be an internal designation for the development phase, the transition towards this Android-based environment seems firm. In fact, this is a recurring rumor that seems to be slowly taking shape. The first devices equipped with this system are expected to hit the market in 2026, at which time it will be revealed whether Google maintains the ChromeOS brand under a new architecture or opts for a completely new name.
