The transition to the latest Microsoft operating system is being much slower than the industry expected. Even though official support for Windows 10 technically ended last October, millions of users resist the change. As revealed Jeffrey Clarke, chief operating officer, Dellduring the presentation of the company’s financial results, there is a surprising number of computers that, although they could be updated, have not been done so.

The data provided by the manager paints a scenario of massive fragmentation. Clarke estimates that there are currently 500 million PCs on the market that perfectly meet the strict hardware requirements of Windows 11, but whose owners have decided to stay on the previous version. Added to this group are another 500 million devices that are more than four years old that, due to technical limitations, cannot make the leap to the new system.

Much slower adoption than its predecessor

The comparison with the previous cycle reveals the lack of enthusiasm for the new platform. According to Dell’s calculations, the Windows 11 adoption rate is between 10 and 12 percentage points below than Windows 10 registered at the same point in its life cycle. Neither the end of support nor the aggressive update campaigns seem to have convinced the general public to abandon a system that they consider stable and functional.

For manufacturers like Dell, this situation represents a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the existence of millions of incompatible computers suggests a theoretical opportunity for massive sales to renew the IT fleet. The industry is confident that the arrival of the new AI PC and exclusive artificial intelligence functions act as a catalyst. In any case, since their arrival, it does not seem that the Copilot+ PCs have had a notable impact on sales.

However, the immediate reality is more cautious. Clarke warned investors that despite this latent potential, the PC market is expected to remain “relatively flat” over the next year. Consumer resistance to changing hardware that still works, added to the lack of clear incentives in software, is lengthening renewal cycles beyond what is usual in the technology industry.
