In a post on SearchIRC's forum w00t announced a new IRC service package named Atheme. "Atheme is a set of customizable Services for IRC networks, compatible with a number of IRCds. To name a few, InspIRCd, Scylla, ShadowIRCd, UnrealIRCd, bahamut, ratbox, hybrid, and IRCd itself" w00t starts.

The project is based on Shrike, an IRC service package which stopped development a few years ago, and was unable to run on other IRCd's. "I'd say about 75% of the code has either been rewritten entirely or reworked" former Shrike and current Atheme developer nenolod said in a reaction to IRC-Junkie. "I'd say about 99% of the code has been cleaned up."

Atheme's website had an intriguing line that got our attention: excluding features designed for oper abuse. We asked w00t what was meant with this. "Well, for example, the ChanServ flags system means you can define exactly what privileges users can do on a channel. Then there's the fact that SRAs (Services Root Admins) can't really do anything outside of operserv- no changing access lists of a channel, no changing topics, kicking users - none of that is possible with the default Atheme configuration."

"Atheme is basically ready now", w00t says. "It's not tested to the degree of say, Anope, but it is ready to rock. Some things aren't quite in yet, like there's some channel and nickname registration things (the removal of channel passwords is one) that didn't quite make it into 0.2, but they'll be there for 0.3."
