"I see that IRC-Junkie is a lot less active lately" a regular last told me in a chat on Undernet. "Noooo!", I replied. "I still do my daily news round each morning spending on average 30 minutes checking my regular online sources. But there simply isn't anything to report about!"

Its true, its like the summer season almost! There simply is not much to report about. Also, I usually get a few tips a week over email, but even this has gone down to maybe once a month.

There really is not much to report about on the IRC community the past few months. You decide yourself wether that is a good or bad thing ;) I could do the report on all new servers-thing and become like servers.ini, but I am not THAT desperate for news!

The traffic is as ever even. Weird enough the number of visitors and pageviews simply keeps growing, despite the lack of articles on juicy fights and other usually well received type of news.

So now you know, IRC-Junkie is as alive as ever, and if anyone has tips on news that is in the interest on the general IRC user (please note this part people who seek cheap advertising for their networks! ;)) then let me know! I'm available over the contact form, or as privmsg on this forum or on Undernet.

PS: I have one or two banner spots available if anyone is interested.

There were some news maybe you have missed:
- Bitlbee news (0.93, 0.99 and 1.0 'Duke Nukem Forever' edition) (http://bitlbee.org/)
- Book about IRC (http://ircnet.com/)
- Not trusted BitchX webpage (http://bitchx.org/ vs http://bitchx.com/)

But it's true, not too much...

Bitlbee I reported about, but maybe not indeed the versions you have above. This is part of the descision "is it interesting news for the general IRC community?" Which IMO is not enough to warrant a new article on each and every version.
But maybe your right and I should keep a closer look to them!

The book: I have emailed the author, but no reply. So for me, sofar this is just one of the many many projects about to be starting or started which in my opinion is not yet interesting to post about. In anyway, the author seems to be uninterested to answer my questions ...

About the BitchX page: you care to fill me ina bit more more about this page, and why its "untrusted" etc? And why havent you tipped me earlier on? ;)

Ok, not every version (like I do), but 1.0 is for sure a nice moment in every development roadmap. Smile You also report some clients with version changes, so I guessed this can be a news too. Even if Bitlbee as it is not a client is not so usable for the community as a client.

I'm happy if I report something earlier then IRC-Junkie. Smile Ok, just kidding. I'm checking the news quite often, so it takes only 10 more minutes. I promise I will.

As for the irc software releases.... I know it's not worth it to give a news item for every software release, but i've been playing with the idea of creating a site where every irc software package can get a newsitem for their releases, a giant repository full of irc software with information on them, links to their webpages, news on releases, and user reviews. I decided to spend my time on Anope instead, but the idea sure is nice i'd say.

Welllllllll ....

If you, or someone else you know, is one of those perosns that likes to keep himself up to date with the lastest software releases, I could make something on the homepage here with something like "$titel - $date - $newVersion" in a list. Clicking the titel could get you either to a page on IRCJunkie with more info, or directly to the site of the software (saves you bunches of working each time for the changelog and so).

Naturally you'll get credits by naming the section "GeniusDex's Software Updates" or so ;)

Anyway, if you, or anyone else likes to update such a section, let me know and I'm sure I'll be able to code soemthing pretty fast ...

PS: Working on the Bitchx.com article but gathering info from 'both sides' and so still. Might take 1-2 days :)

What i had in mind is a tad more complex. Every program/product would have a short informational text on what it is and what it does, and is placed in a category. You can then add versions/releases to those product with a short text/changelog/etc of what changed in that version. Should also be browsable by category, product name, and ofcourse by last releases (which is what you also said). A nice contacting-system (where people can submit a product name/url/text when a product is updated) would make stuff easy and less depend on the staff Wink If you can get something like this up, i'm willing to help keeping it up to date Smile

That is a lot more complex....

Dont know if that is something I want on IRC-Junkie, would have to think about it. I was more thinking off making something that fits on the frontpage in the elft side menu, as there it would attract most attention as well...

I'll ponder it over if I think its worth to put so much time scripting it :)

There you're getting the same issue as me Razz It's a very nice idea, the question is if you want to spend the time doing it Smile It would fit nicely in the left side menu though, if you put the 5 most recent releases and a link to the entire repository mainpage there.

Well, if YOU want to script it be my guest, haha ;)

I might also make something like what I had in mind, and simply let the developers know the url to submit their new versions. Then a page where they can be reviewed before they are being added on the site.

That wouldnt be too hard to script either ...

My son, Elephantman, Network Admin on Europnet suggested that we start an IRC news service around the beginning of December 2005 and one of the first items that I collected was your article including the above quote.

I was uncertain, your opinion seemed to be so well-founded and I hesitate to question one of the 'Greats' of the IRC Scene. However I continued my researches and started posting the results on http://www.ircscene.com
Since then I have posted over 300 news items of direct interest to Network Admins, Ops, Coders and serious Chatters. I notice that you picked up the latest servers.ini, as did my son, before I got to it.

I realise that your selection is based on different criteria to us, and shows your deep knowledge of the IRC Scene and your superier understanding of the issues involved. Our objective is simply to cover all the relevant news, which often includes simple announcements.

Personally I am on a steep learning curve and the range of items that I have collected have given me a powerful image of the range of groups and individuals involved with the IRC Scene.

You are welcome, as are all of your readers, to pass your eyes over our daily news items, to comment on or to follow up with in-depth articles on some of the issues raised as you wish.

Thanks for your example.
