Tom Bral, 20 year-old from Oudenaarde in Belgium has been arrested in suspicion of DDoS'ing the Kreynet IRC network.

Kreynet is the base some commercial TV stations use in Belgium to host their chats. Bral, who is using the nick Inco on IRC, had an application going for a server link on Kreynet.

Bral used to have a server linked to the AfterNet network as well.
"He used to say how he was very very dedicated to Afternet... but then we had some attacks on a testlink that some of us thought was just a little too good for INCO who was not well liked" AfterNet coordinator Rubin told IRC-Junkie in a reaction. "He was a pretty incompetent admin/oper ... always abusing the mailing list with drama and off topic posts. Its scary to think he had access to our hidden hubs IP's."
Although AfterNet never found any hard proof for DDoS from Bral, eventually his position was unmaintainable and his server and O:line got removed from the network.

In a reaction to AfterNet a Kreynet official spoke of two attacks, one of 1,5 hours and the other 3 hours, with 600MB of traffic during the DDoS attack. Kreynet will also have to pay the excessive traffic to its provider.

In an online Belgian newspaper Bral also has been named as a possible member of a worldwide network of people who attacked Microsoft.

The lawyer of Bral titled the actions of his client as 'mischief' and only being investigated as his client is also named as a possible attacker of Microsoft.

We also tried to contact a Kreynet official, but have had no response.

Sounds like this guy was just a little to self confident. Good luck to the AfterNET admins.

That's what always makes me laugh, every single person I speak to who has DDoS attacked websites or individuals always says that they can't be caught, they think that by not using their real names, real IPs or even pretending they can't speak good English when they can, means they cannot be caught.

I'm glad to have more recently been seeing the message that "those who think they are anonymous, are wrong".

Regards,

I always compare DDoS with walking around on the street at night, and scratching other people's car's with a key.

Both DDoS and vandalism such as above doesnt require much skill and effort, but you are causing a lot of damage to the target of the attack.

Besides that, people are using DDoS waaaayyy to easily for the most simpelst of reasons. I really wish people would understand how destructive DDoS can be ...

i 100% fully agree

i used to be a ddos wh0re .. i got into a few wars with some people also ddosed a network for a while cuz it thought it was fun to see a network split and to see the reactions from people.i carried this on for about 2 weeks.. then i stopped and knocked off a website for a week or so.. then i lost interest in the bots and i havent used em for months now i stopped around august/september. I truelly thought i was kewl stealing peoples Botnets and ddosing ..but i wasnt i was a bloody idiot and no i aint asking for sympathy

i used to scan for networks and report em but i stopped that too

*shrugs*.. im not actually too sure on how i should end this

The only problem I see with all this is the possible negative side effect this may have. Knowing the justice system in those regions to a small degree (note: Belgium & Holland maybe neighbors, this doesn't make the law totally the same) I wonder how big the sentence will be. Personally I doubt this kiddiot will do time, perhaps a sentence to do some public charity work and thats very likely to be it.

My fears are that this will only strengthen his reputation in the kiddie world. Personally I hope that they will confiscate his equipment and at least try to continue the investigation with the compromised machines. Heck; I'd really like to see a few lawsuits being filed for damages towards the actual owners / admins / whatever. of those compromised boxes who are IMHO basicly responsible for making this all possible.

I know; it'll probably never happen since most are located in datacentres where most people hardly seem to care what happens, also due to the local laws, and as long as there is a cash flow coming in things as good(tm). Still... One can only keep hoping.
