"I think by now you will all have noticed that WinBot development has generally ground to a halt", WinBot developer Brain starts. " While it is still supported and very well, i simply do not have the time in my life for this project any more. While this is a sad conclusion to finally reach, i do not have any wish to let this project die out."
Brain is planning to release the WinBot as GPL (version 2) under a SVN repository from the WinBot's website. The code first to be released will be from the 2.7 version, "as the 3.0 changes are currently unworkable and i want something working and stable (as WinBot 2.7 has proven to be) as a working base."
"Before anyone asks i will not be using Sourceforge or any other third party site, and i will be using SVN and not CVS as much of winbot's source tree is binary (e.g. delphi forms and bitmaps) which apparently, SVN handles better than CVS" Brain explained.
We asked Brain how the WinBot community has responded to this move; "It really is too early to say, as the announcement was made very recently... However we do constantly get requests (and have been for 6 years now) of releasing WinBot under GPL and users asking why they cannot have source. This seemed like a sensible thing to do and generally the best course of action."
"There are already volunteers yes," Brain replied on IRC-Junkie's question whether volunteers are already joining. "... some wish to take the WinBot 2.7 code and branch it off on completely different tangents while others want to advance towards what WinBot 3.0 was due to be, with the features which were promised a year ago and never completed. I can only assume that this will eventually result in several parallel branches of the project in the long term."
IRC-Junkie reviewed WinBot 2.2 in September 2002.
