Code mixups, typo's or any other error from time to time has an effect greater then anticipated by the staff member who performed the error.

"Human error happened and banned everyone from the network," Chatspike staff member w00t starts to explain to IRC-Junkie. Chatspike staff member Brain typoed a hostmask and the entire network was recognized as a litmus trojan, and banned as consequence. The whole network had to be restarted in order to fix the error.

"We've decided to make it somewhat of an annual celebration of staff stupidity," w00t continued. "We have designated October the 28th 'Blame Brain Day', and it's become a network wide holiday and celebration, It also serves as a reminder to users that just because we may have power, all opers are still human and prone to screw ups."

The day also includes a contest where users can send in images or video's depicting Brain making his now annually celebrated error. Amongst the prices are a virtual host, non-expiring nick and the ability to see users who /whois you. More information about the contest can be found on the Chatspike website.

I guess sometimes it shines through I'm not a native English speaker.

Could write it in French, German or Dutch too if you prefer =)

One can't even pull up a channel list on that network... speaking of stupidity. 120 seconds was more than enough time for me to lose interest and find another net. Luckilly, the server I was on did respond to /lusers without throttling me, so I can see that my departure won't hurt their rather impressive user count.

I was already afraid if this would be seen as a way to spam this network :) I pondered to post about it or not, but did so becuase I thought the idea was original Merengue. I never even myself connected to the network :)

A user on our network asked me if Ive seen the comments about this, and I figured I'll post here what I said to him.

Quote:
#1 If a user looses interest in the network caus he has to wait mesely 2 minutes for /list, I dont care. This is a security measure to battle spambots thats proven to be VERY effective.
#2 yep, it is a network promotional news, but it also shows that there are more going on in the ircworld than netadmin fights and bitching

Ib3N :o)

Exactly my idea. Its original and funny too though.

And gosh, the news is sloooow. I'm not getting half the number of tips or see half of newsworthy things as I use to get/do. The IRC community seems to be settling down or soemthing?

Haha, can't be!

Asmo dear :)

Well, there was a big flux of activity after the mircx scandal where irc-junkie got a big boost of readers caus of your coverage of the case. Thats settled down now, and things are calm. I like it :)

Oh, such events take place regurarly really.. Had similar 'big events' with several big networks as well. Sometimes even with quite heated debates =)

That is good however when the things that are being brought in an enivironment where they can be discussed. And indeed, usually at such events the flux of new readers is quite big.

The site is still growing though. About every new months sees a new visitor record. So soemhow this is independent from what news I bring ...

I only saw a decrease in number of visits when I moved to phpBB, as the previous system did not had a way to be kept up-to-date on new comments, so everyone kept visitting the comments page a few tiomes a day when there was a heated debate.

Unfortunally, this also led to a loss in income of ads! :\ Not that I earn much with it though (its pathetic actually) but it helps me pay the bill of hosting for all my sites and some software I use for creating them.

Lol!

No seriously, all commercial software here is paid for. Windows, ACDSee, Paint Shop Pro, etc. Frick, I even make donations to open source projects I use a lot.

However, I do have the personal policy of switching to opensource software the moment some project is so mature it can replace a commercial solution.

I LOVE mediaportal Awesome piece of software. Its on my PC I use all day, so I also use for for radio and so on the 'puter (with my Haupauge 150MCE). I have s-vhs and cables for audio through the whole house to my livingroom where just the mediaportal part of the screen is put on the TV. Use it as avideo recorder, mp3 player and most of all to watch my movies (files and DVD's).

Got a remote control that works with radio so I can controll mediaportal from the livingroom.

Boy toys!
