|

Worldwide the interest from the law enforcing organizations towards rolling up botnets is increasing. Only a month ago the Dutch police arrested three men who were controlling a net containing an estimated 1500000 machines.
Now Jeanson James Ancheta, 20, of Downey, California has been arrested last Tuesday by the FBI. Apparently it is the first time that a person has been arrested who is selling time on his botnet to outsiders.
He will have to stand trial for a total of 17 counts, including causing damage to protected computers, causing damage to computers owned by the government, fraud and money laundering. Machines found in the potnet belonged to the Weapons Division of the United States Naval Air Warfare Center in China Lake and the Defense Information Systems Agency, both part of the United States Department of Defense.
He also used his botnet for sending spam and DDoS.
He used IRC both to control the bots, and to advertise his 'services' to interested parties.
If convicted, he can face up to 50 years in prison.

While this is good news it doesn't really solve the issues themselves. Which is still people who run a computer connected to the Internet but simply lack the skills or knowledge and sometimes also the interest to make sure the box is really secure.
Unfortunatly this is something you'll even see happening today thanks to the likes of companies like HP, Dell, etc. Like a couple of people who's PC I cleaned up last week; they bought a Compaq earlier this year with XP personal on it, no SP2. It featured Norton Anti virus and Norton firewall but those were mere demo versions; after a few months or so they stopped working. And thus another liable spam, bot, -host was born, without the intention to do so.
As long as that approach doesn't change actions like these will always touch the surface and nothing else.

Public awareness is a big issue. But it is my belief that we as 'educated' people should educate our friends and family about the issues and how to start save computing. Often these people have really no way to know or realise they need to shut their PC off from the big bad outside world, just as they do with their own homes.
"You dont leave your front door or windows wide open either", is a popular sentence that I often get people to think with. And once they realize what they use their computer for: banking, online shopping with their cc, etc, they start to realize they really need some save computing.
