Well, I'm in a writing mood anyway and I'd also like to discuss / share / ask-for some opinions about this issue, also because I'm getting a little annoyed with what we run.

We / I sorta adopted the tiki wiki for our website because it would make things a little easier to maintain. My personal motto is that looks aren't everything, the contents also matters a lot. Well, that and the things you can actually do with the website I suppose.

So now I'd like to ask you guys... Do you think a website is really important for an IRC network ? And if so and if you're in the mood I'd like to ask you a second question as to what software you guys would use for your network (if any that is, ofcourse you could also have setup something manually)

I think it is, at least if you want to attract new users form outside your regular social (online) network of people.

And then to that, I also think looks are important. That does not necessarily mean a slick design with the latest bells and whistles, but a design that fits the type of ntwork, and shows the people behind the network are serious about what they do.

IMO its the same as when I go online shopping: if a site looks very poor, badly setup and so, I wouldnt put my trust in them so easily. Its the way the mind works.

i don't really know, it could be handy to promote your server, and explain irc to newbies Razz. but if you would realy need a site for it.. i think not.

I don't think a website is strictly needed for an IRC network but they do make a good addition to the service.

I'm currently working with a network that provides a service to just under 50 clients and our website is not even near completion.

However, websites are definitely a more suitable medium for providing support to users if we leave out the obvious use of help channels on networks. Tutorials, terms of use, forums and so on are excellent in this respect and far more efficient than an exasperated #help user developing carpal tunnel. =P

The only thing a website will do is attract newbies.

Which is exactly the point for many (starting) IRC networks I think. Naturally, if you just want a IRC network for your family and friends you wouldnt need a website to 'advertise' yourself ...

Of course it is. It's where you should clearly state the rules, servers, and news of the IRC Network.

Other important stuff too like Linking information, documentations and possible a java chat applet for people to have a 'demo' of the network Razz
