Everything you say...
Thursday, January 31 2002 by Asmo
Will be used in the court of law! Something this guy from Brisbane did not realised, was that he could end up in court for what he would say on IRC. The man gave false information about stocks on his website stocktracker.com.au and IRC channel #daytraders.
Most attacks on Internet originate from the USA
Wednesday, January 30 2002 by Asmo
On the IRC you would think this questionable honour would be for some eastern Europe country. But the results of a research done by RipTech over the last 6 months of 2001 show a very suprising result. Not less then 30% of all attacks came from the USA.
Second and third place are South Korea (9%), and China (8%).

Website EFNet is down
Sunday, January 27 2002 by Asmo
For a few days, the website from the EFNet network is down. IRCHelp.org reports that it should be back online in the next week. Apparently some hardware failure is the cuase of the website being down.
New BersIRC development releases
Friday, January 25 2002 by Asmo
In 2 days, 2 new releases from the BersIRC 2.0 beta are released. One of the features added in 2.0/dev5 is the support for proxies.... Why any serious client coder would give out the possibility of the use of such (mostly) illegal hosts is beyond my comprehension. Not to mention how much trouble these users give on IRC (anonimity seems to be used just by people who wreck havoc).

EFNet server news
Wednesday, January 23 2002 by Asmo
Latest EFNet server news:
Easynews, who also sponsor the Mesa* server on Undernet now also has a server for trial link on EFNet, irc.easynews.com.
One server that was closed for non-idented users have opened up again for them: irc.secsup.uu.net I'm curious if the number of real users who just cant get identd working for whatever reason outnumber the clones/floodbots ...
And finally, efnet.vuurwerk.nl allows any incoming user connections again.

EFNet users focus on just a few servers
Monday, January 21 2002 by Asmo
IRCHelp.org, the website from the #irc_help channel on EFNet, reports that 40% of the EFNet users mostly use one of the top 4 servers. With the lack of channel services, thats not a very wise thing to do. In case of a split, this could mean having your channel go opless by a single split. Golden rule, if you dont have a channel service, always have at least 3 bots, on three sepereate botservers, on three seperate IRC servers. And implement some kind of autoauthentication between them, so that you dont have to be around to get them opped.
XChat 1.9.0 released
Friday, January 18 2002 by Asmo
A new version of XChat is released today, 1.9.0. From their own website:
"This version is under heavy development and not meant for everyday use. It requires GTK+ 2.0 (actually 1.3.12 right now)".
More info on the DoS attacks
Thursday, January 17 2002 by Asmo
In a reaction magic, opering on Undernet, told IRCJunkie that the dossing takes place becuase of a channel. Two users, Norsk and Ark, are claiming ownership over this channel, and think they can get the channel if they will DDoS servers long enough. Unfortunally, another server, newyork* had to close down due to these attacks as well.
So here we are again, due to a bad temper from two little kiddies, thousands of users are affected in their freedom to connect to a IRC server and have fun chatting with their friends...
More client news!
Thursday, January 17 2002 by Asmo
BersIRC is going fast. For whoever is using the developer versions of BersIRC 2.0: now dev4 is released. You can get it from the usual Beta site.
And finally, due to a crash, the developer of WiRC lost several files that where important in the development of this windows client. He still has the source code, but lost something else along with the crash. He explained in his own words on the WiRC forum: "But something more important was lost in the crash: my inspiration to continue coding this IRC client called WiRC".
Its that time of the year again.
Thursday, January 17 2002 by Asmo
Its almost deja vu, some people are dossing several Undernet servers again. Result sofar is Geneva* who had to close down for a short while, and Paris* now as well. With others being hit as well.
Whats the point of doing this guys. If you dislike IRC so much that you think you must destroy it, then stop using it. If its just that server, use another, or move to another network. Life can be so simple, but instead some people have choosen to be simple minded.
XChat exploit
Thursday, January 10 2002 by Asmo
Today a serious exploit has been discovered that allows kiddies to send RAW information to a server on the XChat's users behalf. This vunerability is discovered in sending a special string in a PING to a XChat user. The XChat website states:Released 1.8.7 today. A vulnerability was discovered that may allow people to send data to the ircd on your behalf. With default settings, 1.8.x is NOT vulnerable. An easy fix is: /set percascii 0, or upgrade to 1.8.7.
Update: Word is going around that the 1.8.7 patched version still is exploitable.
International Federation of IRC
Saturday, January 5 2002 by Asmo
Thats one serious sounding name, the International Federation of IRC (IFIRC). Their email they sent out today explains their goal:
The purpose of the Federation is to provide a central site for all Network Managers, Operators and Users of the Internet Relay Chat Community.
In practice it means they try to keep an as much as up to date mIRC server.ini file, and a webpage with networks and servers, and any webbased links they might have, as well as an message board.
Security update Peace and Protection
Thursday, January 3 2002 by Asmo
I have been warning a few times on this website for lamers that ask you to type out mIRC code. Often these lines starts with a $decode() thing. Don't EVER just copy/paste such code people, your opening up your entire computer to the lamers.
Pai, from the well known mIRC Peace and Protection build in some protection against this abuse in mIRC. For everyone who uses this script, they can pickup a patch from the PnP site.
New eggdrop version
Thursday, January 3 2002 by Asmo
Version 1.6.8 of eggdrop is released. Apparently its mostly bugfixes, and they dont really recommend to install this update.
Dont forget that there is a new module that will send your uptime from your bot to a website, where it will be listed. To disable this feature, use make iconfig, to interactively select what modules to enable. And then disable this module (its enabled by default).
www.eggheads.org has been offline at time of writing this article, so I couldn't get the url to that page with uptimes.
