InspIRCD Wiki Page Defaced

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

“During the day today, several wiki pages were defaced, We found a lot of ‘Increase your testosterone’ links, and someone spamming ShadowIRCd” the InspireIRCd Wiki section announced.

Rather than an exploit which have been abused, the defacement was able to take place to the way the Wiki was configured. Brain, of the InspireIRCd project, explains; “we would edit pages (as sysops) then lock the pages when we were done. This meant that any pages which were currently blank and not in use were writeable by anyone, as ’scratchpad’ space. The idea of this was to let third party module developers write help pages for their modules, then once they were happy with their pages, we would lock them and link them into the docs.”

The paper explains in great detail a reserach the project did on botnets, and specifically those who use IRC to receive their commands from the drone-runner.

Another popular IRC website cracked

Tuesday, January 4th, 2005

“If some of you thought mIRC Resources had a somewhat peculiar decoration earlier today, you were right” the webmaster of  mIRC-Egg.net reports on his site.

The website was defaced and showed a nazi symbol. We asked webmaster Bop how the defacement took place. “The actual defacement utilized a lacking input checking in the backend application for the site, PostNuke. This weakness has been exploited in the popular forum application phpBB previously (as a side note, we do not use for any part of the site).”
