Although I've been very sceptical with UnderNet at times (well, I still am) and especially when it comes to the way its currently administrated this doesn't mean that "all is bad" (tm).
As you may, or may not, know the network is slowly rolling out the new ircu version which allows for some new interesting options. Not everything is very spectacular, some options were present in other ircd's for some time now, but still this maybe interesting nonetheless:
Channelmode +A / +U. This allows you to maintain control over a non-registered channel, even when the channel is empty! This is done by setting a password, setting up several "chanop levels" after which you're set to go!
Channelmode +D / +d. This will delay the display of /join's and /part's which will be ideal for channels where you'd setup something like an symposium of some sort (a few people do the talking and the others listen in on it). No more need to ignore the joins/parts in those channels (irssi excells at that though ).
CIDR bans. Ever get pestered by someone who's very annoying, has a dynamic IP and sits in the same range (say 192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.100) ? Fear no more, you can get rid of this in one stroke thanks to CIDR bans. Although drastic they might come in very well with all the kiddies currently around. Just ban the IP adress (or best the network adress) with the so called "network mask" behind it.
So, for example, /mode #channel +b *!*@192.168.0.0/24 would immediatly get rid of all IP's in the range 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.255. Naturally you can also use wider or stricter bans, for example 192.168.0.0/28 would simply enclose 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.15. If you wish to know more about this read up on the way TCP/IP works, a good place is to check out wikipedia, here is a good story about IP adresses and the network's they reside in.
For more detailed information about these new features I suggest you check out the IRCU Faq dealing with the new features. Have fun!

Hmm, I think I posted about the changes and explained about all the new features there as well ;)
But... Some repetition never hurts ;)
And considering agreeing to the administration of Undernet or any other big network: its always hard to please everyone, and... there are many different networks with many different ways of operating, so if you dont like a certain network, by all means DO move to another network which you DO like! ;)

yikes!
Hmm, now how to get myself out of this mess ? I know!
Well, while thats all true and such you then still had a situation where not every server on the network ran the same ircd. So the features could work on one server, and fail on the other
Oh well, I guess I completely missed that one
