New feature on Undernet's channel service
Monday, December 31 2001 by Asmo
A good way to help reduce the effects of a flood attack is setting the limit of users allowed in a channel. Many people use scripts on eggdrop bots to do this automatically. Now you can do the same on X. To set/configure this new option:
/msg X set #channel floatlim on/offthen:/msg x set #channel floatmargin 4-20(number of spaces for users between number of users and the limit to set), then lastly:/msg x set #channel floatperiod seconds (20-200 Allowed)
to set the number of seconds between limit checks (require 450+).

For all those bahamut IRCd users, and who are concerned about being as updated as possible: the CVS server is up since 20 december again. From their website:
It's new CVSROOT is The :pserver:cvs@coders.dal.net:/home/dalcvs/cvsroot
You therefor can type the following to get a latest copy of the tree.
cvs -d :pserver:cvs@coders.dal.net:/home/dalcvs/cvsroot login (the password is 'cvs')
cvs -d :pserver:cvs@coders.dal.net:/home/dalcvs/cvsroot checkout bahamut-devel

Firewall blocks IRC traffic?
Sunday, December 23 2001 by Asmo
If you are on EFNet, irc.homelien.no opened up port 5190 for client connections. Sweet if your boss think he prevents you from chatting by closing the usual 6660-7000ish port range.
CreditCard processor hacked
Saturday, December 22 2001 by Asmo
Sexwebsite creditcard processor CCBill have been hacked, and in the hack thousands of passwords and cc numbers have been leaked to the hackers.
"So big thing" I hear you say. Well, to justify putting it up on the news page of a IRC related website: the passwords that where being captured during the hack have been used to compromise machines, and install IRC clients that listen on port 9872 for commands send by the abusers. No need to say the most common use for these bots (called "zombies") is to be used in DDoS attacks.

More on irctools.com
Monday, December 17 2001 by Asmo
This email I got explains all:
Hi Asmo,
I'd like to bring to your attention that the guy from irctools.com ripped a lot of my stuff too. One look at the clients page for example ... he didn't even change the graphics; they still say MUTU. Nice copy and paste of the source. It's interesting how the "reviewer: MUTU" got chopped off though.
I bet that all reviews are ripped. I've seen rips of my addon reviews and DLL reviews. He also took the documentations and stuff from there.
I hope you can write a reply to the news and let the public know of his evil deeds.
Thanks,
MUTU
MUTU is the webmaster of the former http://www.irc-resource.com/ website, Who sadly had to stop a few weeks back due to hosting problems.
New logfile
Saturday, December 15 2001 by Asmo
Today we got a nice visit in the home base of this website #www.irc-junkie.org on Undernet. It was the admin of irctools.com. How nice! That should be ground for some interesting talk between mind alikes. You would think...
Oh well, too bad that irctools.com is a website that promotes illegal open proxies, it has spreaded mIRC addons with trojans, it copy/paste (100% identical) news from other IRC websites, and I could continue a bit like this.Oh well, at least we put up the log for your amusement.

Do you have an AMD processor? If so, you expose yourself as hacker!

Really! Read all about it, here!
Tnx to Revenger for the tip.
little warning...
Tuesday, December 4 2001 by Asmo
Currently a age old trick is being used a lot again, that will make it possible for others to perform commands on your mIRC. The bad guy will ask users to type in a certain line of mIRC scripting code. If a user would do that, it would make it possible for the bad guy to CTCP commands to you, after which your mIRC would perform them, as if they are done by you.
Just as you should never execute exe files you dont know, or accept files per DCC from stranger, you should not perform mIRC code from strangers neither. With mIRC scripts its possible to do a lot on your computer, get your passwords, delete files, takeover your channel, and a lot of other nasty things you dont want.
IRC search tool added
Monday, December 3 2001 by Asmo
We have a exciting new feature added on IRC-Junkie. For a few weeks Skie, ronner and tojoe have been working on a search engine that lets you search for words in the channel names, or topics from the three major networks, Undernet, Dalnet and EFnet. Two thumbs up to you guys, great work )
You can find this new feature on the tools page, or with the quicklink from the menu here on the left
