"This release of Bersirc (Bersirc 2.2.14, Claro 0.0.17) some great improvements, some wanted features, and lots of bug fixes", coder Theo announced over the Berirc announcement mailing list.
Amongst the changes are DCC support (commandline only now with /dcc), system tray support (notifications have yet to be added), auto-connection dialog (server connections and auto-join channels), URL catcher and a Window text save command that will provide basic logging of important chats until more complete logging is implemented.
In the announcement Theo said: "We decided to release now because these features, although not all completed, were significant enough to ease a lot of pain for users. The next release, 2.2.15, will contain more complete implementations. You could say that 2.2.14 is a preview release of 2.2.15."
In a reaction to IRC-Junkie asking what these implementations are Theo gave us the next list;
- A complete DCC implementation (windowed, like other clients) instead of just command-line
- Flashing system tray notifications
- Auto-connect dialog to support nickserv + advanced auto-perform tasks (commands)
- URL catcher to have option to save data on exit, plus who first said it (or once for each time, maybe an option)
Plus:
- Logging
- User-list right click menus (like in other clients)
- Channel list GUI
This list is not set in stone yet, so there might be some additions more, and some features on the list now might be moved to the next release.
"We're aiming to make the interface as user-friendly as possible, but to also allow complete control. The auto-connect dialog is an example, it's really easy and user friendly, especially once it gets nickserv support - but we'll allow "perform" as well, just to give that extra bit of control," Theo explained IRC-Junkie.
Finally, we asked Theo how the support has been so far from the Bersirc community. "With every release people's general responses are getting better - people are complimenting the simplicity and size of the client, despite the lack of some important features. It's really inspiring to hear people enjoying the client, it certainly makes spending time on it easier. If all goes as planned, within a few releases we'll have everything people need."
