IRC Server

How would you go about setting up a irc server, what would you need?

A computer to run it on, an internet connection and the software.

If you dont have a computer to run it off, you can get a shell account pretty cheap, where you can run an ircd. www.egghelp.org has a list of many shellaccounts.

And for the software, there's a bunch of them.

If you arent satisfied with the software on those sites, you can google for ircd, and you'll find other ircds too.

I think you forgot the most important part of them all: the time and the patience to learn how to operate & configure the software. The most important thing would really be to invest some time into making yourself completely familiar with the things you're doing before inviting users over.

Ofcourse there are many people who don't take this approach but I think they'll make a fool of themselves sooner or later anyway. For example; anyone witnessed the UnderNet 10 year celebration where an IRC Oper (out of all people) wasn't familiar with the /ignore command ?

Both of these services sets (srvx and gnuworld) are phenomenal, and the better of largescale production networks use one of the two. GNUWorld, however, is a bit of a resource hog. SRVX, on the other hand, is easy to setup, run, and even contains runtime-configurable commands. IRCu is the server that both of these run on; there are several alternates around with improvements from stock IRCu. Bah, gimme Anope anytime over GNUWorld Wink

GNUWorld maybe nice when it comes to big networks but if you're still small you may really benefit from specific features, for example Anope's defcon.

I guess what I'm basicly trying to say is "don't use the big guns if you can get something custom sized instead".

srvx are good services, bugged a bit but very good services for small/average networks. its just like a mixture of the good of dalnet with undernet. use ircu Nefarious wich has lot of nice features.

Its not recommened to run an IRCd from a home connection Smile

Our server uses Charybdis IRCd and Atheme services both fast and reliable no nonsense combo Smile
