Intel updates PresentMon to version 2.6.0 with a 78% reduction in CPU usage
In addition to continuing to update its drivers regularly, Intel has now published version 2.6.0 of PresentMon. In past releases, the company has already made important changes to its open source application to monitor graphics performance. For example, it eliminated the need for administrator privileges.
Now, this new update focuses on reducing the impact of the software itself on the hardware during games. And boy did he achieve it. According to notes published by the company, The update reduces processor usage by up to 78%. Without a doubt, this is a brutal reduction in resource consumption that will go very well for those who have fairer equipment.
Remember that PresentMon is a free utility. Intel develops it to measure with very high reliability the FPS, latency and behavior of the processor and graphics card through internal events of the operating system.
Unlike other similar tools, this program stands out for advanced metrics such as GPU Busy, which allows you to identify real bottlenecks between both components. Furthermore, the fact that it is open source makes it more universal, because offers full compatibility with Intel, AMD and NVIDIA graphics on the main graphical interfaces such as DirectX and Vulkan.
New metrics that go beyond FPS
Version 2.6.0 stands out for an internal restructuring of the task scheduler to reduce monitoring overhead. The service dispenses with high-precision continuous timers in loops where slight variations can be tolerated.
Likewise, the impact at rest practically disappears (Intel says it drops from 0.003% to 0.000%), because the tool pauses the diagnostic log when data is not being actively consulted on the screen.
Along with this efficiency improvement, it adds a Game Experience interface template, aimed at evaluating parameters that go beyond FPS and that allow evaluating visual smoothness and stability in animations. Finally, the telemetry engine adopts selective sampling that consults only visible sensors, improving VRAM memory reading on AMD and NVIDIA controllers.
You can download the new version from PresentMont’s own GitHub repository, where you also have the complete notes with all the changes that reach version 2.6.0.
