The new PS5 Slim gutted: Sony redesigns the motherboard with CR2032 battery and seals the liquid metal in the style of PS5 Pro

Sony has launched a new internal review of the PlayStation 5 Slim in a totally sibylline way. It was the X user @Modyfikator89 who documented the changes after disassembling a unit corresponding to the limited edition of Wolverine. What new features or changes does it include?

Well, inside the chassis there is an updated motherboard under the reference EDM-051, which incorporates relevant structural modifications compared to previous versions of the console. Unlike the usual aesthetic adjustments in special series, this is a relevant hardware change.

For example, it simplifies track layout and rearranges several key electronic components. The modification affects both the electrical scheme and the general thermal management of the equipment. In this way, the Japanese manufacturer continues to optimize the internal architecture of the system, correcting design aspects that have been present since the release of the Slim variant.

The PlayStation 5 Slim now has a replaceable CMOS battery

One of the most interesting changes for the maintenance of the device is the incorporation of a CR2032 button battery that can be changed very simply. In previous reviews, access to this element was quite difficult and made repairs difficult when the internal clock battery died.

As a curious detail, the instruction manual included in the box is still the old one and does not mention this new compartment at any time, maintaining the brand’s usual discretion regarding technical modifications.

In the cooling section, the EDM-051 board adopts the thermal compound containment solution used in PlayStation 5 Pro, something that has happened before. The area surrounding the APU has been modified to expose less surface area directly to the liquid metal, better sealing the processor against possible leaks or displacement during transport. In addition, The heatsink block has a different construction and materials compared to previous console revisions, improving stability after the 2025 thermal adjustment.

On the other hand, the motherboard replaces the signal controller with a more modern and economical HDMI retimer chip, reducing the unit cost of the circuit. With these adjustments, Sony seeks to lower the manufacturing costs of each console without altering graphical performance, refining peripheral components that do not perceptibly impact the daily gaming experience.

In fact, this silent renewal reminds us of other similar movements. Without going any further, already at the launch of the E chassis, the company reduced storage to 825 GB in the Slim Digital model while retaining its original price. On this occasion, The changes seem intended to improve mechanical and thermal reliability of the device and nothing else.
