Micron, a leading memory chip manufacturer, recently announced the start of construction work on a new facility in New York for memory chip manufacturing.

The company is one of the most benefited by the enormous increase in demand for this type of chips that has led to RAM memory at a price increase never seen before. The whirlwind of investments in AI has led to the planning of huge data centers that require enormous amounts of memory.

Micron itself also announced the elimination of its Crucial consumer memory and SSD brand, making it clear that the company will prioritize the B2B and data center market over end consumers more than ever.

Now, the company wants to continue expanding its manufacturing capacity and has announced a $1.8 billion agreement to acquire one of the factories of the Taiwanese company PSMC (Powerchip Semiconductor manufacturing Corporation).

These facilities include a 300,000 square meter chip factory that Micron will use to increase your RAM production capacity.

This operation will not reduce short-term memory prices. Facilities will not manufacture DRAM chips until second half of 2027

In addition to the acquisition, this agreement also opens up new collaboration options between Micron and PSMC, with long-term agreements to collaborate on the further processing of Micron wafers and increase options in PSMC’s DRAM portfolio.

In any case, this operation will not serve to solve the problem of the current lack of memory chips, since although it is scheduled to be closed during the second quarter of this year, it will not be until the second half of 2027 when these facilities will be used to manufacture new DRAM chips:
