Massive leak on Booking.com: hackers access personal data and reservation details of thousands of users

The giant of hotel reservations, Booking.comconfirmed this Monday a major security breach that has left the personal data of a still unknown number of customers exposed. According to the company itself, attackers would have managed access private information of your users which includes names, emails, physical addresses, phone numbers and, most worryingly, specific reservation details carried out.

Booking admits that the attackers were even able to see “any details shared with the accommodation”, which opens the door to a much more serious privacy breach than a simple email leak.

Reservation data is being fraudulently used to phishing affected users

Unlike other leaks where the data is simply sold to the highest bidder on the dark web, in this case there are already cases of active attacks against users. Some affected people have reported receiving fraudulent messages from phishing through WhatsApp included their real details reserve to give credibility to the deception.

The company has confirmed that they detected “suspicious activity” and that they have taken measures to contain the problem, such as updating the PIN numbers of affected reservations. However, the number of customers affected by the hack is unknown.

It appears that, at least for now, customer payment data has not been leaked. In any case, users should remain alert to possible scams carried out with their data.
