AMD Ryzen Z3 points to six cores and RDNA 4m graphics for portable consoles
AMD could prepare two Ryzen Z3 processors for portable consoles with a different core distribution than the current Z2 Extreme. A leak collected by VideoCardz points to four Zen 6 cores and two low-power Zen 5 cores, accompanied by integrated RDNA 4m graphics with up to 12 computing units. Information comes from Gotou_3rd and CaptainMcShotgun; AMD has not yet announced this family or published its specifications.
The names that appear in the information are Ryzen Z3 and Ryzen Z3 Extreme. The first would be optimized to run around 15 W and the second around 25 W. Those values describe leaked design goals, not confirmed consumption limits or the total expense of a future console. There are also no manufacturers that have announced devices with these chips.
A CPU with four Zen 6 cores and two low-power cores
The mentioned configuration adds six cores and twelve threadscompared to the eight cores and sixteen threads of the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. The official file for the latter specifies three Zen 5 and five Zen 5c cores. In the case of the Z3, VideoCardz describes four Zen 6 and two Zen 5 low-power ones. The message attributed to Gotou_3rd talks about a 4+2 distribution, but warns that it could have changed.
The number of cores alone does not allow us to anticipate how the Z3 would perform. Possible changes in architecture, frequency, cache, and electrical limit alter both per-thread performance and behavior under prolonged load. These parameters do not appear in the leak. There are also no test results that allow us to compare a Z3 prototype with a Z2 Extreme-equipped console.
The distribution is related to Medusa Point, AMD’s future mobile design to which different leaks attribute a combination of Zen 6, Zen 6c and other low-power cores. The proposal for consoles would dispense with four Zen 6c that have been mentioned for the general configuration of Medusa Point. This comparison depends on two products without a definitive data sheet, so it should not be taken as a closed silicon scheme.
RDNA 4m graphics with a configuration still open
The leaked GPU would have 12 RDNA 4m computing units. The information presents it as an evolution of RDNA 3.5 that would add RDNA 4 class matrix calculation units. This combination could facilitate the execution of image reconstruction techniques such as FSR 4, although AMD has not confirmed the compatibility of the supposed Z3 with any specific version of FSR.
The figure of 12 units deserves careful comparison. The current Ryzen Z2 Extreme features 16 RDNA 3.5 units, according to AMD, while the mainstream Ryzen Z2 has 12 based on RDNA 3. A lower count than the Extreme would not prove that the future chip will be slower: the architecture and possibly the frequencies, available memory and power budget would change. None of that data is known yet for the Z3.
The original source also cannot specify whether the Ryzen Z3 and the Z3 Extreme will have the same 12 graphics units active. AMD could use different configurations within the same family, but there is no confirmed distribution. For now, the 12 units describe the design that the leakers are talking about, not a closed file for the two commercial references.
RDNA 4m should also not be confused with a desktop RDNA 4 GPU ported unchanged to a portable console. The available information places it closer to RDNA 3.5, with modifications in certain operations. Until the brand explains its architecture, aspects such as frequencies, memory bandwidth, ray tracing capacity and acceleration functions available in each model remain unanswered.
A smaller package and two power lenses
A 25 × 25 mm FF6 package designed for this class of devices is mentioned. VideoCardz notes that it would be smaller than the FP8 used by the chip from which the Z2 Extreme is derived. The size of the package is of interest to console manufacturers because it determines part of the space available on the board, although it does not in itself determine the final dimensions of the equipment or its cooling.
The separation of 15 and 25 W between the supposed Z3 and Z3 Extreme would fit with handheld laptops that prioritize different autonomy and sizes. However, No consumption, battery capacity or performance curves have been leaked at these values.. AMD allows the current Z2 Extreme to be configured between 15 and 35 W, with 28 W as the default TDP on its sheet. Directly comparing that official range with two leaked targets would lead to premature conclusions.
Also missing are the presentation date, the price for manufacturers, the memory configuration and the first devices that could mount the chips. The leaker acknowledges that even the 4+2 CPU layout may have changed. Until AMD confirms the Ryzen Z3 family, the figures for six cores, 12 graphics units and 15 or 25 W remain data from a leak, subject to change.
