Instagram now allows you to manually rearrange the profile grid on iPhone and Android

Instagram has begun to roll out to all users a function that part of its community had been waiting for for a long time. No, we are not referring to the paid subscription called Instagram Plus. Rather, we talk about the possibility of manually reorder posts within the profile grid. The novelty is already reaching the iPhone and Android mobile applications, after having gone through a previous phase limited to test groups.

Until now, the Instagram profile kept its posts in chronological orderbeyond the option to set up to three entries at the top. With this change, users will be able to long-press a post and drag it to another position within the grid, regardless of the date it was originally published. Pinned posts will continue to appear at the top, so that system does not disappear, but will coexist with the new manual organization.

The function had been announced about a year ago by Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram. At that time, the social network had just introduced changes in the visual design of the profile, with taller and vertically oriented thumbnails, an adjustment that altered the composition of many accounts that took special care of their presentation. Now, Instagram turns into a reality a tool that precisely responds to that need to recover more control over profile aesthetics.

More room to sort the profile without depending on the publication date

The change may seem small, but it affects one of the most visible parts of the Instagram experience. The profile grid works as a cover letter for creators, brands and users who want to maintain a certain visual coherence. Until now, this organization depended almost entirely on the time of publication or the resource of setting only three pieces of content. With the new system, Instagram allows rebuild profile layout without needing to re-upload images or alter the post archive.

The company has not detailed any further special conditions for the use of this function, although it does indicate that the rollout began on June 8 and that it will widely reach mobile apps. Therefore, some users may still take a while to see it active in their account.

Instagram thus responds to a long-standing demand from its community with a simple, but practical improvement. The grid is no longer tied to the calendar completely and it becomes a more editable space, something especially relevant in profiles where the visual order is part of the content or identity of the account.
