Microsoft adds experimental support for hardware AV1 encoding in WSL





Microsoft Keep working to keep adding new features to WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux)a characteristic of Windows that allows you to run distributions of Linux directly from the operating system itself. From Phoronix we know that Microsoft has now incorporated the encoding with AV1 to Table 26.2 for WSLalthough at the moment it is classified as a initial prototype. This will allow you to use the hardware available on your PC to encode with AV1 through DirectX 12.

The code appears to have been contributed directly by engineers from Microsoftusing DirectX 12 next to HMFT (Hardware Media Foundation Transform)which in turn is part of Windows Media Foundation to give access to the hardware acceleration in Windows. This will allow us to offer hardware accelerated AV1 encoding compatible with different providers across the board, instead of having to resort to Linux Media API of each manufacturer specifically.

Mesa 26.2 releases an initial implementation that will continue to evolve

At the moment, the lines added to Table 26.2 experimentally they allow us to encode frames I (Intra) and P (Predicted)but they do not yet support other advanced features. This implies that Microsoft has begun this implementation with a lot of work ahead to offer complete functionality.

WSL continues to expand its graphics and hardware acceleration capabilities

This change is already reflected in Table 26.2which will be released this same quarterand that will provide a functional basis for the AV1 encoding taking advantage of the hardware without resorting to Specific APIs from each manufacturer. Microsoft keep working to improve WSL in tasks of graphics, multimedia and other features that will expand the capabilities of applications and tools Linux that run under Windows.
