OpenAI’s Sora app already reaches second place in the United States App Store
The new OpenAI application, sorafocused on creating videos using artificial intelligence, has become a viral hit despite being available by invitation only and limited to users in the United States and Canada. During his first day, Sora recorded 56,000 downloadsand currently occupies second place in the ranking of most downloaded applications in the American App Store, only surpassed by Gemini. According to data collected by TechCrunch, the application accumulated a total of 164,000 installations during its first two days, between September 30 and October 1. These numbers put Sora ahead of other recent AI app releases, such as Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot, and on par with the debut of xAI’s Grok.
Comparison with other AI applications
To provide a fairer analysis, only downloads in the United States and Canada were compared, as each application has followed different launch strategies. For example, Google’s ChatGPT and Gemini achieved higher initial downloads, with 81,000 and 80,000 first-day installs, respectively. In comparison, Sora ranked alongside Grok with 56,000 downloads, while Claude and Copilot garnered 21,000 and 7,000 installs each on their first day.
As for the App Store rankings, Sora quickly climbed to the third place overall on its second day. At the moment, is already in second place. To put it in perspective, ChatGPT came in at number one, Grok at number four, Gemini at number six, Copilot at number nineteen, and Claude at number 78.
