Samsung prepares its smart glasses with AI without screen to compete with the Ray-Ban goal before making the leap to augmented reality
He Moohan project He put Samsung on the XR map, but the closest commercial play does not go through the futuristic helmet, but for something much more normal: Smart glasses without screensupported by AI, with plan launch for the end of next year. It is not a step back; It is a shortcut. While Apple continues to fight with deadlines and squeeze their Ray-BAN, the Koreans go for a product that already fits in daily life and that also usually used the user to carry technology in the face.
A bridge between the mobile and the “really”
This format (without projection in the field of vision) works as a bridge: Keep what makes smartphone useful (Assistant, camera, calls, navigation, translation), But it releases your hands and reduces friction. The reference is clear: the finish lines have validated the concept, and the rest takes note. Samsung, if it arrives with good timing, can sneak into just when the public already understands what they are for.
The idea is not to replace the mobile, but complement it: you continue with the galaxy in your pocket; The glasses make rapid access interface to resolved functions by AI.
What can be expected
With the information available, the reasonable thing is to think of a set of functions very similar to that of current referents:
- Voice assistant with ia For fast consultations, reminders or dictation.
- Translation of signs or menus using the mobile camera or their own camera if they integrate it.
- Navigation step by step: The AI narrates turns and warns you of crosses without looking at the screen.
- Calls and messages In hands free.
- Discrete photo/video capture (if there is camera) with simple commands.
The technical detail (if there will be camera, what sensor, how the audio resolves: open, bone driving, etc.) is not yet on the table. But the “without screen” approach composses, lightens and lengthens the battery in front of any RA with micro-project.
The piece that makes it viable: the AI
The difference with respect to past attempts (Google Glass, for example) is that lIt has already resolved useful tasks in context. It translates better, understands more natural orders and, above all, adapts to what you do. Samsung has two letters: Galaxy AI and integration with the Galaxy/Smartthings ecosystem. If the matching with the mobile is as clean as with a watch or some Buds, half a battle is won.
The AI also conditions the design: many functions can run on the phone and glasses act as light “terminal”. Less weight, less heat, less than loading.
Goal, Apple and the hole that Samsung can take advantage of
Goal is going to launch a simple 2D screen version this year. That can move a lot of market before Samsung teaches your proposal. Problem? It is also the opportunity: if the goal grows, it expands the category and normalizes the use. Apple, meanwhile, continues to deal with its own AI roadmap and has delayed other intelligent home pieces for the same reason. There is room for Samsung to enter competitive price, with global availability and refined marketing.
The challenges to be resolved (and that the user will notice)
- Autonomy and load: If you don’t get up to date, it’s not worth it. A headphones-style case-style loader could be key.
- Privacy: Microphones and (if it includes) Chamber. Clear indicators when you record, transparent data policy and granular controls in the app.
- Audio: Open ears not to isolate yourself, but without filtering the entire street. Here much of the comfort is decided.
- Ergonomics: Weight, hinges, rods that do not bother after hours. This is not fixed by the software.
- Latency: If the voice answer takes, the magic is broken. The pairing with the galaxy has to be instantaneous.
Where can Samsung make a difference
Samsung plays at home when it comes to ecosystem. A couple of obvious examples:
- Mobile continuity: You issue a WhatsApp, you summarize a note or shoot the Galaxy camera remotely.
- Smartthings: Control lights, garage door or air without touching the mobile has all your way in glasses.
- Security and accounts: A single Samsung account, cloud backup and easy restoration if you change device.
If they also succeed with price and availability (not “only in the US”), they can reach an audience that today looks at the Ray-Ban curious, but does not finish making the leap.
When they appear, It will be necessary to look at four things: Real autonomy, audio quality in street, what does the AI do without connection and how they explain privacy. And, of course, the launch functions catalog; If they nail them in the basics (translate, navigate, calls, notes) and do it quickly, the rest can grow by software.
