Will the dual GPU return in Gaming PCs? A mod allows you to separate the neural rendering of DLSS 5 to a second graphics card

The configurations of dual graphics card have disappeared, leaving this function for the industry in servers and data centers. But with the arrival of DLSS 5 We are seeing many mods and options, such as being able to use two graphics cards for gaming. A user has created a mod to divide the tasks of traditional rendering and neural rendering using two NVIDIA RTX 50 Series cards.

A mod allows you to use two NVIDIA RTX 50 to play

This new mod, which is still in the experimental phase, allows you to send the neural rendering to another card that is not in charge of rendering the game. The mod, developed by Marcelo Guibout, has managed to use two 16 GB NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti cards for Cyberpunk 2077. The first is responsible for rendering the game, while the neural rendering data is handled by the other card. Although this is not really an SLI configuration, it allows distribute work between the two GPUs.

One GPU renders the game and the other processes the neural rendering

Neural rendering is applied directly over an already completed frame. This allows you to send the raw frame, already completed and rendered with the first GPU, to the second GPU for post-processing with neural rendering. The second GPU is also responsible for displaying the results on the screen, and thus does not have to return the post-processed frame back to the first GPU.

Perhaps we have gone from abandoning SLI configurations, to go back to using two GPUs for different processes. With this new function it is possible to free up resources from the first one, one of the weak points of DLSS 5 where with a single card we have seen performance reduced by 45-50%.

The result is that the frame rate has increased between 59 and 125%if we compare the execution of DLSS 5 and the rendering of the game on a single GPU, come on, as usual. It is also worth noting that the performance was still inferior to DLSS 5 disabled. It remains to be seen what performance a game with official support would have, but at the moment there is only NBA 2K27.

The mod seeks to reduce the impact of DLSS 5 on performance

But this technique is not new, a similar one was already used for distribute jobs between two GPUs with Lossless Scalingone GPU rendered the game and the second was dedicated to generating frames. A way to distribute jobs between two GPUs, although with current prices it will surely not be a good option, at least economically speaking.
