The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 aims to maintain the package size of the Gen 5, but it would continue to arrive with a price increase
The future Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is once again seen in the chain of rumors with a technical piece of information that helps better outline Qualcomm’s strategy for its next high-end mobile phone. According to a new leak, the standard version of the chip would maintain the same package size as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, specifically 126.2 mm². On paper, this continuity could be interpreted as a decision aimed at containing costs, although the information itself suggests that this will not prevent a significant price increase for mobile manufacturers.
The leak comes from the well-known leaker Reptalica and revolves around an idea that has been taking shape since the end of 2025, when we already said that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 would arrive with support for LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0, in addition to being manufactured in 2 nanometers. Shortly after, the rumor of a family divided into two also appeared, with a standard version and a Pro version, something that we already explained when talking about a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro compatible with LPDDR6. This new leak fits precisely into that line of segmentation by Qualcomm.
According to published information, the standard model would reuse the same package size as the Gen 5. That could simplify part of the design and help Qualcomm not skyrocket manufacturing costs even further. However, the trade-off would be clear: less physical room to expand key elements such as the cache, the GPU or certain areas of the chip. That is, maintaining the size would not be good news for those expecting a more aggressive jump in capabilities within the non-Pro version.
The difference between the standard version and the Pro begins to be drawn more clearly
The leak itself maintains that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro I would have more space available and I would take advantage of that advantage with concrete improvements. These include a particularly large L2 cache, which would help reduce latencies and improve energy efficiency, as well as a 50% larger bus area for the GPU compared to the standard variant. If that is confirmed, Qualcomm would be using the package size as one of the real dividing lines between both versions, not just as a commercial or nominal issue.
This approach would reinforce the feeling that Qualcomm wants to create two very marked steps within its highest range. The standard model would continue to be a premium chip, but with a somewhat more contained approach, while the Pro version would be reserved for more ambitious configurations and, predictably, for even more expensive mobile phones. It would not be a totally unexpected turn, because signs of this double reference strategy had already been appearing in the Elite series since last year.
Now, even if Qualcomm manages to save some by reusing similar dimensions in the base model, the source insists that the price will continue to rise. The main reason would not be in Qualcomm itself, but in the cost of the manufacturing node. Here TSMC and its 2 nanometer process comes into play, which continues to appear as the great factor that will determine the final cost of silicon.
The 2nm node continues to be the big underlying problem
Curiously, this new leak mentions the first generation of the process TSMC N2while other previous rumors had pointed to N2P to gain a little more advantage over Apple. There is no confirmation of which node will ultimately be used in each variant, but the mere jump to 2nm already represents strong pressure on the price of the chip. In that sense, the continuity of the packaging does not change the general film too much: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will continue to be an expensive component.
The issue also intersects with another issue that Qualcomm has been trying to resolve for months, which is cost pressure throughout the mobile chain. In April we learned that Qualcomm was even exploring a possible return to Samsung to manufacture the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, precisely in a context where TSMC makes advanced processes more expensive and memory availability remains highly stressed.
For now we continue moving in the field of filtration, but the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is beginning to emerge with some coherence. The standard version would maintain a package size similar to that of the Gen 5 to avoid raising the structural cost even further, while the Pro would remain the technical showcase of larger caches and more graphical muscle. The problem for manufacturers is that, even with this partial containment, The move to 2nm will continue to push up the price of high-end Android in the next generation.
