GDDR7 memory will expand its capacity per chip to 4 and 6 GB in 2027

graphics cards NVIDIA RTX 50 Series have released the new GDDR7 memorywith quantities reaching 32 GB in consumer models, and up to 96 GB in RTX PROs. A combination of 96 GB that is achieved thanks to the modules of 3 GB per chipinstalling 16 of these modules on both sides of the PCB. But this amount of memory can be expanded in next 2027 thanks to the 4 and 6 GB chips.

4 and 6 GB GDDR7 chips will arrive in 2027

According to what the well-known Golden Pig Upgrade tells us, the GDDR7 memory on chips with capacities of 4 and 6 GB will be available in 2027although with the possibility of being postponed until 2028. This will offer a greater amount of memory using fewer chips and therefore reducing the necessary space. For example, for 16 GB of VRAM, 4 chips of 4 GB each will be enough, until now it could be done with 8 chips of 2 GB or 6 of 3 GB to exceed 16 GB and offer 18 GB of GDDR7 memory.

This will also benefit the cards for professionals that will also be able to obtain a greater amount of VRAM in less spaceor increase the maximum capacity beyond the 96 GB that the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell has. A reduction in space that is sometimes necessary in professional environments, as well as expanding the available memory capacity, both solutions are sure to be well received by the industry.

The higher capacity GDDR7 will allow more VRAM to be installed with fewer chips

But with the current situation we can predict that these modules will not have a good price, at least not in their initial production. This may pose a problem like the current one with the 3 GB GDDR7 chips rarely used in consumer and/or professional cards due to their high price. It may be that the 4 GB chips are intended for a greater number of cards, while the 6 GB chips appear to a lesser extent due to their presumably higher cost for manufacturers.

AMD and Intel could also adopt the new GDDR7

NVIDIA has almost exclusively released this GDDR7 memory, but surely the next generation of AMD Radeon graphics and even if Intel decides to launch a version of its Intel Arc for desktop computers, they dare with this GDDR7 memory that by then we hope will already be available in these new capacities of 4 and 6 GB that will offer more memory options in graphics cards and other devices that use it.
