Discord will implement age verification on its servers starting in March
Discord is a popular communication service used both in the gaming and social sectors, with huge communities of all types available.
Given the great popularity it has garnered in recent years, the company behind the service has announced that it will implement an age verification system so that minors cannot access servers and content considered for adults.
All Discord users will be considered minors until their age is verified
Verification will be mandatory starting in March to access all content hosted on the platform. Minor users, or those not verified, will see certain content blurred, while channels, servers and commands restricted to adults will be directly blocked.
There will be two methods of age verification: Make a selfie video, or send a ID photo. In the first case, with the selfie video, an automated system will estimate the user’s age and it will never be sent or stored outside the user’s own PC. On the other hand, the company ensures that the photograph of the DNI will be deleted immediately after age verification.
Although the DNI system offers a little more reliability, in the past other services have used age estimation by video or photos with not very good results as they are easily modified with AI and other systems.
In cases where age cannot be easily verified, Discord may request further verification evidence. Furthermore, in the future they do not rule out implementing new methods.
