Linux Mint recovers from hibernation and presents three new applications for its next version

If you are considering making the jump to Linux or want to try a new distribution, this is of interest to you. One of the most interesting and most liked Linux distros, Linux Minthas revealed the new features that will arrive with its next major version.

The developer team itself, in its October monthly newsletter, has confirmed the official return of the system hibernationa power management feature that had been relegated in many distributions after its removal in the Ubuntu base due to its configuration complexity and swap disk space requirements.

Additionally, to address the issue of laptops draining their battery when suspended for several days, the distribution will come with a dedicated power management page in the system settings. This tool will facilitate the activation of the most complete hibernation, which is one that saves the entire session to disk and shuts down the computer completely without consuming power.

In addition, the system will add compatibility with the hybrid suspensionwhich is the one that keeps the session in memory, but creates a backup copy on disk. There also comes the mode of stepped suspensiondesigned to go into hibernation as soon as the battery reaches a very low level.

Along with the energy improvements, the file manager Nemo launches a side preview panel accessible with the F7 key or through a button in the status bar. This function allows you to view image, audio and video files without opening them, also showing technical metadata such as the capture date or the camera model used.

Well, in addition to these new features, mainly focused on energy management, the new version also stands out for the introduction of three native tools designed to simplify common system tasks. They are these:

  • Superlight. System monitoring tool responsible for measuring real-time consumption of CPU, RAM, SWAP, GPU, network transfers and temperatures. It also includes a storage analyzer capable of breaking down the space occupied by folders, Flatpak packages and Steam games.

  • Velocity. Terminal emulator that incorporates tab overview, customizable visual palettes and window splitting similar to web browsing. Add color distinctions based on privileges (red for root permissions and blue for SSH connections) and shortcuts with preconfigured commands.
  • Unfold. Lightweight archive manager based on 7zip and 7zip-RAR, focused on basic compression, extraction and viewing tasks with full support for password-protected archives.

The team has completed this package of new features with the integration of Xenitya maintenance fork of Zenity 3.44 for GTK3, and the complete redesign of their community web portal, from which they have eliminated the dependency on PHP and the local storage of credentials in favor of identification through GitHub profiles. At the moment, all these functions remain in the active development phase awaiting their final integration into the stable branch.
