Microsoft prepares a free version of Xbox Cloud Gaming, but with ads
Playing for free in the Xbox cloud could soon be a reality, although with some fine print that not everyone will like: Mandatory announcements before each game. According to The Verge, Microsoft is already internally testing a free version of Xbox Cloud Gaming that will not require a subscription to Game Pass, thus opening the door to millions of new users who want to try the service without paying.
Until now, playing in the Xbox cloud was a privilege reserved for Xbox subscribers. Game Pass Ultimatewhich recently suffered a controversial price increase. With this new plan, Microsoft seeks to universalize its service, although with limitations. For example, each game session will last one hour, with a maximum of five hours per month. And before starting each session, an advertisement will be shown for about two minutes.
Additionally, Microsoft plans to include selected program titles in this version. Free Play Days and Xbox Retro Classicsin addition to allowing users stream games you already own.
The advertisements would have already shown their paw
The curious thing is that some users claim to have seen ads even with their paid subscription. A user, Natalya Sirinovaposted a video on X showing a Dior ad appearing while loading Gears of War: Reloaded. Although the authenticity of the clip has not been confirmed, the rumor ignited the networks and increased skepticism about the direction the service is taking.
As for technical performance, the new free plan is expected to offer more limited quality, probably at 1080p and 12Mbpsin front of the 1440p and 30Mbps available to Ultimate members. For now, there are no details on which regions will be able to test the service first, but public testing is expected to begin in the coming months. Microsoft’s strategy seems clear, namely, expand the reach of Xbox Cloud Gaming without giving up monetizing every minute of screen time.
