Microsoft prepares a new OneDrive app for Windows 11 with a redesigned gallery interface
As we have learned, Microsoft is developing a new dedicated OneDrive app for Windows 11, which includes a modern interface focused on viewing photos and videos, as well as file management and editing. The application was discovered by leaks on Microsoft servers and runs as a standalone file called OneDrive.app.exe.
When you start the app, a OneDrive icon appears on the taskbar and a window that allows you to access the user’s photo library. The app uses a web-based design that combines Fluent Design with rounded menus and blur effects characteristic acrylic of Windows 11.
An update that goes for Google Photos
Something curious is that the new app allows you to switch between gallery mode and file mode. By default, it opens in gallery mode, which includes sections such as Moments, Gallery, Albums, People, and Favorites. The Moments feature is reminiscent of the mobile version of OneDrive and shows photos taken on the same day in previous years.
The new gallery offers a floating menu at the bottom when selecting a photo, with built-in tools for editing or deleting images. Although some editing options match those of the Windows Photos application, the layout and design seek to facilitate the organization and management of multimedia files directly from the app.

Although Windows 11 already integrates OneDrive in File Explorer and the Photos app, the company seems to be looking for a centralized space for users to manage their content without depending on various system applications. The web experience appears fluid and responsive, improving the perception of web-based applications compared to previous versions such as Outlook for Windows 11.
No release date has been announced, but Microsoft will hold a special OneDrive event next October 8where it is expected that more details will be given about this new application.
