The Google Pixel Tag is leaked with an oval design that breaks with the AirTag
Google has been letting Samsung and Apple share the object tracker market for years without moving on its own, despite having a location network, Find Hubwhich is theoretically larger than any of its rivals. That wait seems to be about to end. A name that had been circulating for weeks in isolation, the Google Pixel Tagjust gained a lot more weight thanks to a batch of commercial listings that have started appearing in various online stores.
Until now, the Google Pixel Tag was little more than a loose mention in leaks related to the upcoming Pixel 11 range. There was no image, no model number, and no real confirmation that the project was close to seeing the light of day. That has suddenly changed: Several online listings already include the device with a commercial name, model number and even official color, in addition to a first image of the tracker itself.
A model, a color and an image that confirm almost everything
The listings that have begun to circulate identify the device with the model number GA12506the trade name “Google Pixel Tag“and the color”Foglight“, a name that fits with the nomenclature that Google usually uses for the shades of its Pixel products. Added to this is an image of the tag itself, which allows you to get a fairly clear idea of its design even before the company officially presents it.
The design shown in that image breaks with what is usually seen in this type of accessories. The vast majority of trackers on the market opt for circular or square shapes, as is the case with Apple’s AirTag or many third-party models compatible with different location networks. The Google Pixel Tag, on the other hand, opts for an oval silhouette that is reminiscent, as can be seen in the leaked images, of the shape a Fitbit Air would have if the strap were removed.
Without its own eyelet, as already happens with the AirTag
Follow the same path that Apple took with its AirTag, forcing users to resort to covers or accessories external to be able to hang the tag on your keys, put it in a purse or attach it to a suitcase. It’s a common design decision in this segment that prioritizes a cleaner finish in exchange for relying on an additional accessory for more common daily use.
Regarding the technical specifications, there is still a lot of ground to confirm.. There is no data available on whether the Google Pixel Tag will incorporate ultra wide band (UWB), a technology that in other trackers allows for much more precise short-range location than simple Bluetooth. It is also not known if the battery will be replaceable using a standard battery, as is the case with the AirTag, or if, on the contrary, Google has opted for a design with an integrated rechargeable battery, something more common in other devices in the Pixel family.
What the leaked commercial file does tell
One of the detected listings does include a complete commercial description of the product, something that helps to better outline its proposal for the end user. According to this text, the Google Pixel Tag is intended as a compact and resistant solution to keep track of everyday objects such as keys, wallet or luggagee, relying on the Find Hub network (the evolution of the old Find My Device) to show the location of the object directly from the smartphone.
The sheet also mentions that the device incorporates a integrated speakerdesigned to facilitate the search when the lost object is relatively close and needs to be located by sound instead of just by position on a map. Furthermore, the text insists on the care that Google would have taken to protect the privacy and personal data associated with the use of the tracker, a particularly sensitive point in a product category that, by definition, serves to track the location of things (and, indirectly, of the people who carry them).
A piece that would fit with the August calendar
The temporal context plays in favor of this leak being confirmed soon. Google plans to hold its event presentation of the Pixel 11 family on August 12an event where the company traditionally takes the opportunity to announce, in addition to the main smartphone, other products from its ecosystem such as watches, headphones or accessories. That the Google Pixel Tag appeared as a surprise within that same event would fit with the pattern that Google has followed in previous launches.
Even so, it is advisable to take this possibility with some caution. The very fact that the Google Pixel Tag had not been leaked in detail until now, unlike what usually happens with Pixel phones, which arrive at their presentation events with practically all their details already known, leaves the door open for the final launch date not to coincide exactly with that of the August 12 event.
