The physical format exceeds 30% of sales of several of the best-selling PlayStation games
Sony has opted for fully digital games starting in January 2028a decision that is being strongly criticized by many users. Many believe that a physical format like the one it has been using until now is necessary to preserve the video game. But Sony does not think the same, and continues to argue that the market share of the physical format is very small for most video gamesand that its preservation value is limited.
Physical sales represent less than 20% of revenue
The numbers are there, and during 2026 Sony has earned $655 million in PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 gameswhich represents less than 20% of income. Some games have a higher share of physical sales, such as Resident Evil Requiem with 30.2% of total saleseither Wolverine with 32% of the totalbut other games don’t reach 10%.
The majority of sales in digital format are driven by online reservations, which allow the game to be downloaded even a few days in advance, or by releases exclusively in digital format. Players are divided, those who prefer single-player games, with narrative and adventure, prefer the physical format. Those who play sports and multiplayer games usually buy it in digital format.
Resident Evil Requiem, 007 First Light and Wolverine stand out in physical format
Of the 5 best-selling games for PlayStation during 2026, 3 have had a fairly high percentage of sales in physical format. Resident Evil Requiemwhich is in second position, has managed to sell a 30.2% in physical formatwhich means 1.3 million of its total sales. 007 First Light has sold 29% in albumswith 873,000 physical copies sold. Wolverine has managed to sell 32.3% of the total in physical formatthis means 799,000 copies of albums sold.
In total, Physical sales of PlayStation games totaled $1.2 billionwith titles that alone reached almost 100 million dollars such as Resident Evil Requiem.
Sony maintains its plans to abandon discs
But these figures do not change Sony’s mind, which continues to think that the total percentage of games sold in physical format is insignificant. With the digital format the second hand would disappearand with it the possibility of buying games that have a high price at a cheaper price. Loans would also disappear, at least in the simplest way, which is to directly leave the box with the disk to a friend or family member.
It seems that nothing will change Sony’s thoughts, as it continues with its plans for abandon the albums when 2028 enters. A key date that can also coincide with the launch of the PlayStation 6, where we can all predict that it will come without disk drive.
