Xbox will allow you to convert physical One and Series X or S games into digital copies from August 31

As we had anticipated a few days ago, Microsoft has taken advantage of this Gamescom 2026 to announce its new feature with which you can convert your physical games to digital format. This new feature will be available to test through the Insider channel starting next Monday, August 31. Thousands of Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S games will be available to convert to a digital format that you can use on other devices.

Thousands of Xbox games can be converted into digital copies

Thousands of games will be eligible for a digital copy, but not all games will be compatible. To use this function you will only have to insert your compatible game into the Xbox One or Series X or S and start the game. This will assign you a digital license with all its rightssuch as Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming. A feature that will help preservation of video games and that will also allow you to expand your game library on more devices, as the Xbox ecosystem reaches more and more devices.

The digital license will follow the disc if it is sold or transferred

A large list of compatible games that Microsoft has not confirmed, but we know that most drives are compatible except for first copies that may not contain the information necessary to assign a digital license. Microsoft assures that they will start with thousands of games and more will be added in the future. If the disc is sold or transferred, the license will go with it to the new owner and it will be added to your library.

The feature will be available for Xbox Insider on August 31

You can start testing this new feature from next Monday August 31whenever you are in the Insider channel.
