Nintendo closes the door on another rise in the Switch 2, although its profit falls by 16%
As of September 1, the Switch 2 costs 499.99 euros in Europe. It is the consequence of the price increase that Nintendo announced in May, during its previous results presentation, and that in Japan was applied earlier and with more intensity. In the United States, for its part, it rose from 449.99 to 499.99 dollars.
Well, there is good news. According to reports Reuters, the company does not plan to touch the price again. This was explained by its president, Shuntaro Furukawa, during the presentation of the results for the second fiscal quarter, in which he assured that Nintendo does not contemplate additional changes. And, in his words, the memory situation has not changed significantly and the company is in a position to secure the quantities it needs.
Obviously, the question was on the table for a known reason, namely the shortage of memory chips caused by the beastly demand for AI servers. This has not stopped affecting all types of products, from mobile phones to computers. Apple, without going any further, has warned this week that it will notice pressure on its margins during the Christmas quarter. A notice that comes after a resounding rise in its entire catalog.
Less profit, but the same sales forecast
The figures for the quarter, however, have not accompanied Nintendo. According to the same media, its operating profit fell by 16%to 73.9 billion yen, below what analysts expected, and sales also fell. Investors are concerned about both the memory shortage and the lack of major games for the Switch 2.
Despite this, the company maintains its profit forecast for the entire year and its objective of selling 16.5 million Switch 2. It must be remembered that, until March 31 of this year, the console accumulated 19.86 million units sold worldwide.
Regarding the catalog, Nintendo launched The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time this Thursday, which has received good reviews. Serkan Toto, founder of consulting firm Kantan Games, believes the game should sell well and give the company a solid quarter, although he also notes that Nintendo won’t publish any major releases until the next fiscal year.
The contrast is provided by Sony, which in the same quarter increased its operating profit by 45%, although it sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5, compared to 4 million a year ago.
