It’s now official: The Nintendo Switch 2 will have interchangeable batteries this fall thanks to new European regulations
European regulations continue to force manufacturers to put aside closed and poorly upgradeable designs for the benefit of consumers. Nintendo was one of the companies that had embraced this type of design in its Switch 2, preventing users from changing their batteries.
Now, the Japanese company has confirmed that, to comply with the imminent replaceable battery law that comes into force at the beginning of 2027, it is going to launch new versions of the Nintendo Switch 2 and his entire family of commands to provide them with removable batteries. These new models will begin to arrive in stores this summer in a phased manner.
The new Switch 2 with removable battery will only weigh 10 grams more
The main console, The Nintendo Switch 2 will receive this redesign in the fall. The new design increases the weight of the console to 411 grams and requires a 5172 mAh battery. In both cases they are tiny variations: we are talking about the capacity being only 1% less than that of the launch model, and the weight increase is reported to be just 10 grams.
It is true that to this increase we must add the new Joy-Con 2, which will also have replaceable batteries in winter, making the console in total weigh 14 grams more than the current version. The classic first-generation Joy-Con will begin to arrive with this system this summer, keeping at least their capacity intact.
Nintendo controllers will also have modular batteries. There will be models that gain lightness and others autonomy
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller will suffer a little more from the necessary change towards a version with a modular battery. The revision of this controller, scheduled for winter, suffers a 16% cut in its battery, falling from 1070 mAh to only 897 mAh to make room for the removable system; Yes, 7 grams of total weight are lost along the way, making it be lighter.
As for the retro controllers that will arrive at the beginning of 2027, the one for Nintendo 64 remains the same in terms of battery, adding only one gram, while the one for GameCube he gains 5 grams, but manages to scratch a 5% extra autonomy, rising to 525 mAh.
Users who want to change these batteries when they degrade will be able to purchase the replacement kits directly from the official Nintendo store, although it is practically assumed that cheaper third-party batteries will come out.
