A cyber attack against European supermarket chains manages to raise the temperature of their freezers to 50 degrees

A new cyberattack against European supermarkets manages to raise the temperature of their freezers to 15 and 50ºC

In mid-October there was a cyber attack against several European supermarket chains in which criminals were able to raise the temperature of freezers in several stores in France, Belgium and the Netherlands to more than 50 degrees, spoiling all the food they contained. The attack took advantage of a defrost mode built into these types of devices that, unfortunately, were not isolated from the network.

Despite that incident, which should have put all European channels on notice, It has happened again.

A new wave of attacks has affected supermarket freezers on the continent, this time in stores in Belgium, Sweden and Luxembourg, although cases have also been reported in Ireland and Estonia. The attackers tried, again, to attack freezers in stores in the Netherlands, this time without success.

The attackers have increased the temperature of the freezers to between 15 and 50 degrees

Carrefour, Delhaize, ICA, Coop and Spar have been some of the chains affected, with more than 50 supermarkets with computer incidents.

In the case of the establishments in Belgium and Luxembourg, it seems that the freezers increased their temperature to 15ºC, a value not as high as in the first attack in October, but which has still caused numerous losses. In the establishments in Sweden the temperature has indeed reached 50 ºC.

At the moment it is unknown if any country is behind the attacks or if they are isolated actions.
