Cable Matters Launches 40Gbps USB4 KVM Switch with 140W Charging and Support for 8K Displays

Accessory manufacturer Cable Matters has introduced a new USB4 KVM switch. The idea is far from the typical USB hub. Rather, what is behind this device is that the user can switch a workstation between two laptops without handling cables. How exactly does it work? Basically, the accessory centralizes the signal from a display or USB-C docking station shared between the two devices. For example, one may be personal and the other work. Thanks to this connection scheme, the switch allows you to share peripherals and high-resolution screens by pressing a single button.

The brand explains that the device integrates from the factory two cables for the host equipment and a single output connector to the receiving screen. For terminal selection, it includes an integrated button. However, the most striking thing is that has a remote control which works even without having to point it at the device. Another interesting point is that the switch supplies up to 140 W via USB Power Delivery directed exclusively to the laptop selected at any given time. So you have plenty of power to charge any device.

And what is the brand’s idea regarding its device? Well, explains Jeff Jiang, president of the company, “switching between a work laptop and a personal computer should be simple.” With this accessory it is much easier to maintain a clear work environment free of distractions. Without a doubt, something very interesting for those who prioritize order at their table as much as possible. This system avoids duplicating keyboards, mice and screens in the same position.

40 Gbps bandwidth and support for Thunderbolt 4 and 5

If we delve a little into the technical aspect, the device provides a data transfer rate of up to 40 Gbps, being fully compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 infrastructures. As for the video output, it is quite generous and covers a wide spectrum of users. As shown in the specifications, supports 8K resolutions at 60 Hz6K at 60 Hz and refresh rates of 4K at 240 Hz. In this way, the 40 Gbps link guarantees enough bandwidth for demanding panels and simultaneous external storage.

In any case, Cable Matters also mentions certain technical limitations essential for the correct operation of the installation. For example, the associated connection bases must necessarily have a removable connection cable, ruling out intermediate USB-C adapters or extensions. Additionally, host computer ports must support video output using the DisplayPort Alternate Mode protocol, since pure data USB-C ports cannot output a graphic signal to the switch or the end display.
