Google will invest $15 billion in India to create its largest AI center outside the US

Google has announced a massive investment of 15 billion dollars to build a new AI-focused data center in South India. The announcement was made this Tuesday by Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, who confirmed that the investment will be deployed over the next five years. It must be remembered that even OpenAI has been interested in the company’s cloud services.

This project will make the region the Google’s largest AI center outside the United States. The initiative comes after a year of intense negotiations with local authorities in the state of Andhra Pradesh, where the facilities will be located, specifically in the city of Visakhapatnam.

A strategic bet in the race for AI

The investment responds to the growing global demand for cloud services and the enormous need for computing capacity required by the rise of artificial intelligence. Large technology companies are immersed in a race to expand their infrastructure so as not to be left behind. Not in vain, Google would be planning to use nuclear energy to power the necessary data centers.

Returning to India, as has been learned, the project will be developed by Raiden Infotech, the Indian subsidiary of Google, and will be distributed in three different campuses within the same city. This scale underscores the strategic importance the company places on this new location.

This decision is part of a broader global strategy. Google itself recently increased its capital expenditure forecast for 2025 due to strong demand for its Cloud services. Furthermore, India is establishing itself as a key market for digital infrastructure, also attracting other technology giants such as Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS)which are already making significant investments in the country.
