Memory has been going up for a year, but TeamGroup has just predicted that the hardest moment is yet to come

The memory crisis does not seem to have an end. At least, not one that’s close. The president of ADATA, Chen Li-bai, even spoke of ten more years of shortages, driven by AI both in data centers and also in the devices themselves. SK Hynix, for its part, delays the improvement until at least 2030, while Michael Dell points to 2027 as an even worse year than the current one. It must be taken into account that Dell accumulates some 95 billion dollars in server requests that cannot be served due to lack of memory.

TeamGroup is now added to that eternal list of companies that predict the worst, with a nuance about the times. During the results presentation held on November 2, the memory module manufacturer explained that the most critical moment of the shortage has not yet arrived.

According to the Chinese media MyDriversthe company places the worst moment of the crisis between the fourth quarter of this year and the end of the second quarter of 2027. In fact, it does not rule out that there are clients who, even having money, are unable to buy units.

Increases of up to 40% in a single quarter

As for prices, TeamGroup expects them to continue rising between October and March. The company anticipates that some models could become more expensive between 30% and 40% in a single quarter. The memory has already accumulated an entire year of consecutive increases, and the company assures that, in the short term, it sees no signs that the trend will reverse.

And, according to his explanation, this cycle is not similar to previous ones because the structure of the sector has changed. What happens is that both chip and module manufacturers have concentrated on a few companies. Obviously, added to that is the almost obsessive prioritization with AI. The company hopes that the teams dedicated to calculating this technology will drive even more demand for LPDDR5Xa low-power memory variant.

Less conventional DRAM because of HBM

The other factor is in the chip factories themselves. Large manufacturers such as SK Hynix and Micron have its 2027 production is practically sold and they are diverting a good part of their lines towards HBM, which leaves them more margin. As a result, DRAM for hardware enthusiasts and OEM equipment is seeing its supply cut again and again.

Micron, along the same lines, does not expect improvements in either 2027 or 2028, so none of the forecasts published so far place relief before the end of next year.
