The iPhone Air does not take off: Apple would already be cutting production due to lower than expected demand

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his reporting on Apple’s supply chain, has posted a tweet mentioning that the company is reducing orders for the iPhone Air. According to the analyst, demand for this new model has turned out to be lower than expectations, which has forced measures to be taken.

Kuo reports that Apple is adjusting both shipments and production capacity dedicated to the iPhone Air. Most providers are expected to reduce this capacity by more than 80% by the first quarter of 2026. This is a significant adjustment that reflects the lukewarm reception of the device.

A pattern that repeats itself in the range

The report also details that some specific components of the iPhone Air, particularly those with longer delivery times, will be completely discontinued by the end of 2025. This decision suggests that the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro already cover most of the user demand in the high range, even with the good start that this model had in China.

Under such circumstances, it is not strange to find a parallel between the Air and other previous models. For example, the mini models only lasted two generations (iPhone 12 and 13). For their part, the Plus variants also failed to get significant traction on the market, especially considering that they have been eliminated this year. As Kuo himself says, there is “little room to carve out new market segments and position itself, since previous attempts with the mini, Plus and now Air models have not been successful.”
