Windows 11 macro security patch completely breaks the copy and paste feature in Microsoft Excel

Lately, AI is finding security flaws at an impressive speed. So much so that Microsoft can’t keep up with releasing patches to cover holes and, of course, so much haste eventually takes its toll. In this last September update cycle they have made almost 1,000 corrections at once. And what has happened? Well, Windows 11 has broken where we least expected. This time what has exploded is something as basic as copy and paste in excel. Yes, you read that right.

There is a logical explanation for all this update madness. Today, attackers are already using AI to find breaches and companies have to protect themselves against the clock. The problem with doing things quickly is that quality controls are not always effective.

A bug that drives you crazy because it doesn’t warn you

The worst thing about this crash in Excel is that does not warn you. There is no error screen nor does the program close suddenly. In Microsoft’s words, it is a silent failure. The user selects a text, clicks on copy and paste and the cell remains blank. You try again and still blank. And it doesn’t matter what you use because it happens in Excel 2024, it happens in version 2021, in 2019 and even in 2016. Without a doubt, the error potentially affects a lot of users.

Microsoft itself admits it like this:

“In Microsoft Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, the paste operation may fail silently. Although users try to paste content, the source remains selected and the destination is not modified. When this issue occurs, users receive no indication of the error, such as a beep or an error message. Microsoft is investigating the issue and will post more information in this article when it is available.”

This would be an anecdote if it weren’t for the fact that This month of September is being quite complicated for Windows users. The mess with Excel is by no means the only failure they have had. A couple of weeks ago, another update broke shared folders. Then Remote Desktop failed and then the USB headset stopped working. For all of this they did release a quick emergency patch, but the copy and paste bug in Excel remains unsolved.

Despite Microsoft’s good intentions with Windows K2, which promised to improve the quality of the system, the truth is that things remain more or less the same. In the end, the reality is that the user does not stop receiving surprise updates every now and then to solve constant bugs. This, logically, generates distrust among ordinary users and administrators, who must now choose between patching almost 1,000 vulnerabilities or waiting for serious errors in the system to be resolved.
